Subject: Fairfield Twp and W. Fairfield in Fayette Co??

The maps of Fayette Co. that I am working with are somewhat limited so I was
hoping someone could help me out with this.
Many of my McElroy ancestors are from Fairfield Twp., Westmoreland Co.,
however, I have recently seen two documents referring to Fayette Co. that
confuse me.

1. A transcribed 1850 census page that refers to "Fairfield Twp.
Fayette/Washington County". I'm wondering if this is a typo or is there a
Fairfield Twp. Fayette Co.

2. A 1901 book referring to an ancestor who, most references state, is
believed to have spent all of his life in Fayette Co. This reference states
"...occupies the old home at West Fairfield, Pa." I'm not finding a West
Fairfield on any of the maps I have available.

Do I need a course in PA geography or just a few weeks in the hills and
mountains of Pennsylvania??
