Subject: [PAFAYETT-L] Laurel Hill in Georges Twp.
Date: Thu, 04 Apr 2002 20:36:57 -0500
Regrading the recent posting on the above, in old deeds (1700's) and
land warrant/survey/patent records, I have seen what we would today call
Chestnut Ridge referred to as "Laurel Hill". This ridge runs more or
less continuously diagonally through Fayette County, dividing the
northwestern lowland half from the southeastern "mountain" region.
Chestnut Ridge thus runs along the edge of Springhill, Georges, South
Union, North Union, into Dunbar, etc. This can get confusing, because
there is also another ridge, further east, in those days and still today
called "Laurel Hill". That one divides Somerset from Fayette County.
Laurel Hill State Park is there today. What is actually Laurel Hill
today is not in Georges twp. The references that I saw to "Laurel Hill"
referring to what we think of today as Chestnut Ridge described my
ancestor Benjamin Brownfield's land as "near Laurel Hill on one of the
head branches of the Redstone". This land is now in South Union, on the
headwaters of Redstone Creek, just beneath Chestnut Ridge. Not sure if
this is the same reference to what the inquirer was asking about, but
from my experience, I'd bet it was.
