Sorry about no message sent out yesterday. A trip to Tucson and shopping
and appointments made for a long day. We live 20 miles from the closest
grocery store in Tucson, so I was a bit tired when I got home.
LOOKING BACK: Thirty years ago AUGUST 9, 1945, SOLOMON G. KREPPS, IV, 71,
died at the family residence, 500 Water St., Brownsville, where he was
born June 18, 1879. An undertaker for years here, he was a member of a
pioneer family. The KREPPS homestead was built in 1818.
August 9, 1945, JOHN "LEFTY" HARDOBY, startled district baseball fans las
evening as he pitched a no-run, no-hit game against the Vestaburg Redwings
as Vesta Six won the game 1-0. HARDOBY walked one batter.
Ten years ago, MONDAY, Aug. 9, 1965, "When CHARLES E. KEIBLER, 66, of 371
Shelton Ave., Brownsville, retired July 31, with over 47 years with the
Monongahela Railway, he matched the 47 years his father, CHARLES W.
KEIBLER, served as lockman on the Monongahela River.
Ten years ago, Monday, Aug. 9, 1965, JOSEPH L. VICITES, Uniontown, the new
state commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, will lead the
Pennsylvania delegation to the national VFW convention in Chicago, Aug.
12-20.
CRAWFORD, MRS. DOROTHY E. (MRS. RUSSELL), 71, of 71 National Pike East
died Aug. 15, 1975 in Brownsville General Hospital. She was born May 18,
1904 in Addison Twp, Somerset County, a daughter of MRS. MARY E. HOLT
COCHRAN and the late JOHN COCHRAN.
Survivors in addition to her mother, include her husband, RUSSELL
CRAWFORD, a daughter, MRS. BETTY V. RICE, two granddaughters, GAETA
McCLELLAND and KERAN WALKER; a brother, DEAN COCHRAN; three sisters, MRS.
MYRTLE HAWK, MRS. BERTHA DUGGAN, and MRS. DAISY WHITE. Burial in
LaFayette Memorial Park under the direction of the Andrew J. Skirpan
Funeral Home in Brownsville.
KRISTEN LEIGH GOLEMBIEWSKI, daughter of MR. and MRS. TED GOLEMBIEWSKI,
JR., Thompson, is celebrating her second birthday. She is the
granddaughter of MR. and MRS. TED GOLEMBIEWSKI, SR., Thompson, and MRS.
HELEN HUDOCK, Brownsville and the late JOSEPH HUDOCK. She is the great
granddaughter of MR. and MRS. KAZIMER GOLEMBIEWSKI and MR. and MRS. FRED
LOWERY, and MR. and MRS. STEPHEN KOTAN, SR. Her mother is the former
PATTY HUDOCK.
COLBURN, HARRY R., 76, of Irwin Dr., Valley Inn, Monongahela, PA, died
Aug. 28, 1975 in his home. He was born in Draketown, PA, April 7, 1899, a
son of the late JAMES L. and ETHEL FLANNINGAN COLBURN. He was preceded in
death by three sisters and a brother. He was a member of the First
Christian Church of Brownsville. He was a resident of Monongahela since
1942 and was a retired agent of the Pennsylvania Railroad with 50 years of
service. Surviving are his wife, LOUISE PAULEY COLBURN, one son, RICHARD
H. COLBURN; a daughter, WILMA TUTTLE, three brothers, LLOYD, CHARLES, and
PAUL; three sisters, MRS. RUTH ANN FORSYTHE, MRS. LILLIAN MORRIS and MRS.
MARY GALLIAUT. Burial in Greene County Memorial Cemetery under the
direction of the L.M. Frye Chapel, Monongahela, PA.
Aug. 21, 1975, DORIS L. NEWMAN, Brownsville, recently completed 25 years
of consecutive services with the G.C. Murphy Co. in Brownsville.
Announcement has been made of the engagement of JANE DEE EMERY, a daughter
of MRS. SARA JEAN EMERY, 300 Bull Run Road, Brownsville and JAMES K.
EMERY, to RONALD ROSIEK, son of MR. and MRS. BERNARD ROSIEK. Aug. 1975.
FRIENDSHIP HILL, once the home of ALBERT GALLATIN, Secretary of the
Treasury in the cabinets of Presidents JEFFERSON and MADISON, and the
former summer home of J.V. THOMPSON, Uniontown coal baron is for sale.
The 724 acre estate, situated about 15 miles south of Uniontown on Route
166 in New Geneva, is presently owned by SHERWOOD MARTIN. Mr. MARTIN and
his late wife, the former EVELYN THOMPSON, granddaughter of J.V. THOMPSON,
purchased the site in 1951. (This is a long article, anyone wishing it,
please email me privately. There is no date, it is from the Morning
Herald-Evening Standard, Uniontown, and I would guess it to be in late
Aug. 1975. The author of the column is Betty Frangos Rohlf).
Aug. 27, 1975, Former Emperor, HAILE SELASSIE, 83, died in Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia. He ruled as an absolute monarch until he was overthrown by a
military coup and he was deposed Sept. 12, 1974.
"YOUR BROWNSVILLE AND MINE" column by Gary Thomas, Aug. 29, 1975, included
a 1915 teacher's magazine, which listed the rules of conduct for teachers;
"1. You will not marry during the term of your contract.
2. You are not to keep company with men.
3. You must be home between the hours of 8 PM and 6 AM unless attending a
school function.
4. You may not loiter downtown in ice cream stores.
5. You may not travel beyond the bounds of the city limits unless you
have the permission of the chairman of the school board.
6. You may not drive in a carriage or automobile with any man unless he
is your father or brother.
7. You may not smoke cigarettes.
8. You may not dress in bright colors.
9. You may under no circumstances dye your hair.
10. You must wear at least two petticoats.
11. Your dresses must not be any shorter than two inches above the ankle.
12. To keep the school room neat, you must sweep the floor at least once
daily and scrub the floor at least once a week with hot soapy water, clean
the blackboard at least once a day and start the fire at 7AM so that the
room will be warm at 8AM."
In that same column, CHARLES B. HALL, son of MARGARET R. HALL, Union St.
Ext., Brownsville, was recently one of seven named Deputy Comptrollers of
the Currency with the Department of the Treasury. He is married to the
former HELEN MARTELL of Grindstone and they have three children, LINDA,
CHARLES and MARGARET E. HALL. The family is residing in Arlington, Va.
