Dear Tony,
I remember the Christmas in 1950 (Freshman Year) when the
old maid home room teacher sent another girl & me to
purchase a little tree & decorations for it. She could be
really mean & gave homework that kept me awake half the
night writing, but could be nice & have us over to her home.
I considered myself lucky that I was not her pet because she
made that girl's prom gown & poor Donna cried her eyes out
because it was so old fashioned & practically covered up all
but her face.
You should not have to purchase supplies but I guess
teachers did a bit of that back then too for something
special. I know my daughter-in-law buys books etc. for her
library sometimes, when she wants something special.
You must still feel rewarded that you are there to see
you need to be that psychologist and listener, or provide
clothes or wash them if needed. That's the wonderful kind
people you & Barbara are. Those students are going to
remember you with love in years to come.
Howver, it certainly can be hard not to be in the closed
room or touch them when they could really use the feel of a
human hand in comfort. I guess that's when the kind
expression on your face & soft words have to take that
place. All this because you have to protect yourself and
the students from what the world has come to today. I seem
to remember being told that in every civilizations downfall
that it was the "Moral Decay" that finally did them in.
This world has become too tolerant of what is just plain
wrong and does not defend enough the things that are just
and right. Good Grand Parents, good parents and good
teachers are the key to the future, for the children are our
future. Happy New Year! Ellen (ETHS)
