Hi, Michael, At the time of your Samuel Crawford's birth, 1779, Fayette County had not yet been created; that did not happen until late in 1782. Redstone Twp. was not created in Fayette until 1797, after your ancestors had left. It appears that a rather large area was colloquially referred to as "Redstone Country" during the time when the area was first being settled. So, what appears to be a reference to a specific area is not. There was one early(1770-1771) prominent Crawford settlement in Luzerne Twp. which was likely thought of as Redstone Country. It was on the Monongahela River. I was founded by two brothers, James and Josiah. Looking at an extract of early tax records for Fayette, I see James listed 1785 (the earliest date for these records) through 1799 in Luzerne. There's also a James, Jr. 1786-1795. There's a Josiah, 1785-1799 and an Ephraim, 1785-1795 in Luzerne. There were also Crawfrods early in Washington Twp. which could possibly also have been con!
sidered part of Redstone Country.
Unfortunately, the Washington and Menallen Twp. tax records beyond 1789 have not survived so it is not possible to guage whether or when someone might have left. There were the following Crawfords in early Washington Twp.: George, 1785-1789; James, 1785-1788; John, 1788; and William, 1788. Before Redstone Twp. was created, that area was a part of Menallen; and in early Menallen there was a Hugh Crawford, 1785-1788. In the 1790 census for Fayette, the following households were recorded as containing males under 16: William in Washington had 3; James, Jr., James, Sr., John, and Josiah all in Luzerne had 2 each; and Hugh in Menallen had 2. Regards, Jane
