Subject: Laurel Messenger Indexes - December 2004
Date: Sun, 5 Dec 2004 21:04:58 EST

The CD-ROM Subject Index which I compiled of the "Laurel Messenger",
Newsletter of the Historical & Genealogical Society of Somerset County (H&GSSC) has
been updatted. Copies of the CD-ROM will be donated to: H&GSSC; Meyersdale
Public Library (Cynthia); and Uniontown Public Library (Vicki at PA Room). Copies
will be sent to other area Genealogical societies on request. I will make
copies for others for a copy fee. The update consists of:

1. About a dozen small errors were corrected.

2. The 2004 volume, XLV [45], was indexed and added. All 45 years, 179 issues
are now included

3. About 500 of the early entries in the "Families" category which had only a
surname given have been updated by adding given names

The current database consists of 10,137 record entries, about 420 more
than before. That is an average of 55 index entries for each issue.

This is a Subject Index, not an every name index. However the name
entries in the Deaths (34), Family (3494), Notes & Queries (915; and Obituaries
(294) categories cover many of the family names of the county. The database
entries are organized under about 200 categories.

The Early Vital Records compilation for Somerset County families which I have
been working on for the past 1-1/2 years is progressing nicely. I have made a
CD-ROM of its current contents and have donated copies of this PRELIMINARY
version to the above societies and libraries.

This current preliminary edition consists of 22,400 records in the
Births, 8020 records in the Marriage, and 35,700 records in the Deaths databases.
Due to repetition of names from different sources, there are many duplicate
names in each database.

I hope to complete this project by the end of 2005.

The updated Laurel Messenger Index will be mailed this week. Anyone
interested in having their own copy, or for more information, please contact me
directly. Owners of the previous version may request a current version for a
reduced copy fee.

Best wishes,
Ora Flaningam /
