Carolyn,
I do not know how I mised your request for Elder Info but it went right by me.
It is now 1:15 in the mornign. I got off work at 12 and found your email.
There is alot of information on the Elder Family in my Magee Family book. The
book is called THE MAGEE FAMILY, A HISTORY OF THE FAMILY IN AMERICA by Robert
Ashley Stevenson, copyright 1968 (This book is in reprint and if you want a
copy email me and I will tell you about it.) There is a copy of this book at
Kittochtinny Historical Society in Chambersburg and at the Chambersburg
library.
Page 339 Starts with the Elder Family.
The Elder Family of Paxton, Penna., is the first to fiquare in the affairs of
the state. This family is mentioned in both The Colonial Records and The PA
Archives. It included the Rev. John Elder, Col. Joshua Elder and Joseph Elder.(
I am skipping over some)
In the 1794 Census Thomas Elder is mentioned as living in Washington County.
Whether he was the the father of John Elder, we do not know. We know that John
Elder mentioned as living in Bedford County was our ancestor. At that time the
family consisted of John Elder, his wife Nancy (Rose) Elder, and children:
Arthur, William, John Jr., Mary, Jane, Elizabeth, Martha and Nancy. Seven more
children were born from 1794-1803, and in 1805 he migrated to Mercer County and
settled in North Slipperyrock Township (now Scott Twp., Lawrence Co., PA
The book goes on to state that John Elder had 15 children and it gives a good
history of them.
On page 413 it has John Elder Jr. (7th child) B. D. June 10, 1861, m. Sarah
Swann of Mt. Pleasant, Westmoreland Co., PA, buried in the Middle Presbyterian
Church Cemetery near members of the Rose family. She was the dau. of George &
Elizabeth Swann. They lived in Huntington Twp., The deed for their property and
the last will and testament of John Elder are on file at the county court house
in Greensburg, PA. Two boys and six girls are mentioned in the will.
a. John Elder
a. Nancy Elder married to James Caughran
a. Lucinda Elder married to William Wray
a. Elizabeth Elder marreied to John Allsworth (she could have married twice) By
the way I am researching the Pattons and have the marriage record of Eliz.
and Robert Patton of Franklin Co.
a. Matilda (Tillie) Elder (b. 1836, d. 1911) buried with parents.
a Sarah Ann Elder ( buried with parents). Had an Irwin, PA address at time of
her death.
a. Ann Mariah Elder
a. James Elder
That is all on John Jr. line. There were Elders that married into the Magee
line here in Franklin Co. They must of traveled west to Bedford Co. and the
Slippery Rock area togatheror about the same time.. Hope this helps you some.
