Hello everyone
I apologize to anyone that receives multiple copies of this letter.
There have been some new developments involving Camp Security, the last
undeveloped Revolutionary War prison in the nation. Please forward this
message to everyone that may be interested. Although you may feel that
your
involvement is not needed in this case, you may need help with some
battle in
the future. This information was supplied by Becky Roman of Historic
York,
Inc.
Tim Pasch has revised his plan for developing the site that Camp
Security
once stood. These revisions are as follow:
* The number of house lots has been increased from 72 to 105. This is
more
than allowed by township ordinance.
* The average size of the lots has been reduced from about 1/2 acre to
about
1/4 acre.
* 18 of these houses will be duplexes. Only detached homes are allowed
with
the current zoning of the property.
* 12 of these house lots are situated behind other lots and have no
road
frontage. They will have panhandle driveways for access.
* 17 of the lots have no access to a road, even by panhandle driveway.
They
are located on a very steep slope along the creek. All are duplexes.
* The open space lot containing a portion of Camp Security has been
reduced
from 5.2 acres down to 2.4 acres. A portion of this 2.4 acres may need
to be
graded in order to build on 3 house lots on its east boundary. Mr.
Pasch
agreed to keeping this open space lot 5 acres in size as a condition on
the
Corps of Engineers release of jurisdiction. (The original plan had no
open
space lot.)
* The wooded area along the creek is not covered with house lots and
detention ponds. Wildlife habitat there will be destroyed. It was a
nature
area on the prior plans.
The Springettsbury Township Board of Supervisors will choose whether to
accept an extension of 1 month to Mr. Pasch. His deadline was the end
of
May, but it may be the end of June is this is accepted. They also need
to
make decisions on multiple variances needed for this new plan. The
Board
needs to make a decision by June 28, 2001.
I was asked by some people what other organizations are seeking to
save/purchase this site. I can supply contact info to anyone
interested.
They are:
Historic York, Inc.
The Friends of Camp security
York County Farm and Natural Lands Trust
Preservation Pennsylvania
Archaeological Conservancy
The following are other organizations to contact for support. I can
supply
contact info for anyone interested.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation
Advisory Council for Historic Preservation (ACHP)
National Park Service
Military Heritage Foundation
National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution
National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution
Below are names and contact information for reporters working this
dilemma.
It will be helpful if others come forward showing support or that they
had
ancestors involved with the camp.
Caryl Clarke - York Daily Record (717) 771-2032 Email:
Wendi Himmelright - York Dispatch/Sunday News (717) 854-1575 (I need to
get
an email for her)
I can also supply information to anyone interested in contacting local
political leaders. I have email addresses for most of them. Please
send me
letters/emails showing your support for this cause. I am supplying the
supervisors these letters showing them that people do care for this
site.
With the support of you, we can make Camp Security a place that we can
all
learn about the past. On the other hand, we can let Mr. Pasch destroy
this
site, and wish we did something to stop it. Thank you all for your
support.
