Harry Melvin BAITH, 86, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at the North East
Medical Center of Kannapolis, N.C.
Born in Three Springs Feb. 11, 1916, he was a son of the late Benjamin
F. and Clara (Long) Baith.
He was married to the former Louise Kurtz Schmallbach in 1943.
He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Keene of Concord, NC., and
Linda Halverson of Mesa, Ariz.
There are six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Three sisters survive; Gladys Baith and Frances ‘Nellie’ Schmallbach,
both of Statesville, NC., and Mildred Baker of Hesston.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters; Connan,
Warren, Samuel, Lucy, Pearl, Dollie and Mary.
A 1929 graduate of Saltillo High School, he served with the U.S. Army
during World War II.
For a time he lived in Morristown, N.J., and Florida before moving to
North Carolina.
He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved the Lord
Jesus and is now home with the Lord.

William J. CARTER, 76, of R.R. 3, Box 1592, Mount Union, died
unexpectedly at 1:37 am. Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at Altoona Hospital,
Altoona.
Born Sept. 19, 1926, in Buffalo, N.Y., he was a son of the late George
W. Sr. and Lottie (Berkstresser) Carter.
He was united in marriage to the former Betty May Rosenberry Jan. 31,
1947, in Mount Union. Mrs. Carter survives at their home.
He is survived by one daughter, Candice N. Fortney, Mount Union, R.R. 3;
one granddaughter, Nicole Fortnev, Mount Union. R.R. 3; and one brother,
George W. Carter Jr. of Mill Creek.
He was preceded in death by a sister. Annabelle Smith.
Mr. Carter was of the Methodist faith.
He was a life member of American Legion Post No. 107, Mount Union.
A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during World War II.
He retired in 1996 after 39 years service with U.S. Silica, Mapleton,
where he worked as a sand analyst.
He enjoyed hunting.
Interment will be made in Mount Union Cemetery.

Olive I. HAWKINS, 88, of Little Egypt Road, died Tuesday, March 11,
2003, at Woodland Retirement
Center in Orbisonia, Pa.
Born July 8, 1914, in Hustontown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late
Wilbert and Ruth Wagner
Helman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd Hawkins, in
1966. They were married March 28, 1931. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church in Harrisonville.
She is survived by four children, Ruth Knepper of Woodland Retirement
Center, Clair Hawkins and Roy Hawkins, both of Harrisonville, Pa., and
Harry Hawkins of Hustontown; two sisters, Helen Morningstar of Saltillo,
Pa. and Betty Dick of Roaring Spring, Pa.; 17 grandchildren and 23
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Norman Hawkins and Raymond
Hawkins; one sister, Ora Ramsey; one brother, Robert Helman; two
grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Fairview United Methodist
Church, Harrisonville. Pastor Brian Sweeney will officiate. Burial will
be in Fairview Cemetery, Harrisonville.

Anne LOPATA, 89, of Morrisons Cove Home, Martinsburg, formerly of Six
Mile Run, passed away at 12:10 am. Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at
Morrisons Cove Home.
Born June 12, 1913, in Amsbury, she was a daughter of the late George
Sr. and Helen (Preplett)
Husick.
She was united in marriage to John Lopata May 30, 1928, in Amsbury. Mr.
Lopata preceded her in death.
She is survived by two sisters and one brother; Susie Surdis, Brooklyn,
N.Y.; Helen Winters, Baltimore, Md.; and George Husick, Saxton.
Numerous nieces and nephews survive.
She was preceded in death by four brothers; Michael Husick, John Husick,
Joseph Husick and Frank Husick.
Mrs. Lopata was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Dudley.
She was a member of the Saxton Senior Citizens Center and was a former
Democratic Woman of the Year.
Primarily a homemaker, she also worked in cleaning services.
She enjoyed ceramics and flowers.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 15, at Curtis
A. Heath Funeral Home, Broad Top City, with The Rev. Patrick Leahey
officiating.
Interment will be made in the IOOF Cemetery, Broad Top City.

Anne (Rohm) POSTLETHWAITE, 85, of No. 2 McKnight Place, University City,
Mo., formerly of Huntingdon, died at 9:40 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2003, at
her residence.
Born Nov. 22, 1917, in Coaldale, she was the daughter of thc late
William and Elizabeth (Fox) Rohm.
She was united in marriage to Preston Murray Postlethwaite Oct. 21,
1944, at First United Methodist Church, Huntingdon. Mr Postlethwaite
preceded her in death March 31, 1978.
She is survived by two daughters and one son; Mrs. Kenneth (Sarah P.)
Jerina, Clayton, Mo.; Mrs. Jeffrey (Dorothy P.) Pitts,
Wachapreague,
Va.; and Preston M. Postlethwaite Jr. and daughter-in-law, Denise,
Morristown. N.J.
Five grandchildren survive; Michael and wife. Staci Jerina; Anne Jerina;
Anthony Jerina; Preston Postlethwaite; and Aileen Postlethwaite. She is
also survived by one great-granddaughter, Ella Jerina.
One brother, William L. Rohm of Ormond Beach, Fla., survives.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Maxwell Rohm.
Mrs. Postlethwaite was a member of Samuel United Church of Christ,
Clayton, Mo.
She was past president of the auxiliary to the St. Luke’s Hospital, St.
Louis, Mo. and was an active volunteer for the St. Louis Symphony
Orchestra.
She attended West Chester State Teachers College and Juniata College,
from where she graduated with the Class of 1944.
She was a teacher of music at the former Smithfield Elementary School,
Huntingdon.
She loved to play the piano and to play golf with her husband.
Known for her cooking, she also enjoyed hand sewing.
Funeral services will he held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at the John
B. Brown Funeral Home, 417 Washington St., Huntingdon, with the Rev. Tim
Shafer officiating.
Interment will he made in Riverview Cemetery, 245 Standing Stone Ave.,
Huntingdon.

Warren R. "Bill" YOCUM, Esq., 80, of 234 Penn St., Huntingdon, died
Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon.
Born April 23, 1922, in Altoona, he was a son of the late Warren R.
Yocum and Ida May (Lantz) Yocum Obermyer.
He was united in marriage to the former M. Faye Welch June 22, 1945, at
The Church of the Transfiguration (Little Church Around-the-Corner), New
York, N.Y. Mrs. Yocum survives at their home, where they have resided
since 1955.
He is survived by one son and two daughters; Michael Scott Yocum,
Plantation, Fla.; and Beth Ann Yocum and Susan Carol (Yocum) Pierotti,
both of Huntingdon.
Five grandchildren survive; Lindsey and Meredith Yocum and Sara, Matthew
and Jason Pierotti.
He is also survived by three brothers and one sister; Walter F. Yocum,
Titusville, Fla.; Gerald
Obermyer, Switzerland; Frances Obermyer, California: and Charles
Obermyer, Texas.
Mr. Yocum was a member of Huntingdon Presbyterian Church, Huntingdon ,
where he previously served as a deacon, trustee, president of the church
corporation, elder and as a member of the session.
Admitted to the Huntingdon County Bar Association in January 1952, he
served as its president in
1960 and 1974. He had been a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association
since 1952.
He was a life member of Standing Stone Post No. 1754, Veterans of
Foreign Wars, and a member of the Frank P Hommon Post No. 24, American
Legion, both of Huntingdon. He had formerly been a member of the
Huntingdon Hook & Ladder Fire Co., the Huntingdon County Cancer Society,
the Huntingdon County Chapter of the American Red Cross and the
Huntingdon County Game, Fish and Forestry Association.
He served as the chairman of the patrons ticket committee for the
Huntingdon Bicentennial and was an active member of the Huntingdon
County Democratic Party, previously serving as the party’s treasurer. He
was also a life member of the Retired Officers Association.
He attended the Mapleton public schools and graduated rom Mount Union
High School with the Class of 1940. He attended Dickinson College,
Carlisle, and graduated from the Dickinson School of Law, also in
Carlisle, in 1951.
He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, in the American,
European-African and Asiatic-Pacific Theatres of Operations. Enlisting
in 1942, he was later commissioned a lieutenant junior grade as a naval
aviator. He was the recipient of the Navy’s Air Medal and the
Distinguished Flying Cross.
Discharged from active duty in 1948 to the U.S. Naval Reserve, he
subsequently retired with the
rank of lieutenant commander.
Mr. Yocum began his career in law by serving his clerkship under his
preceptor, attorney Robert H. Henderson. On April 1, 1960, he formed the
law partnership of Simpson and Yocum with attorney Robert B. Simpson.
He was elected to serve as the Huntingdon County District Attorney in
1960 and 1964 and was appointed to serve as the Huntingdon Borough
solicitor, the solicitor to the Huntingdon Area School District, the
Huntingdon County Area Vocational-Technical School and various
Huntingdon County townships.
Following the dissolution of Simpson and Yocum, he continued the
practice of law from his offices on William Smith Street, Huntingdon. In
addition to, and in conjunction with the practice of law from his office
on William Smith Street, he was the broker for, and jointly owned, with
Mrs. Yocum, Colonial Real Estate Agency, founded in 1964.
Mr. Yocum loved his wife, children and grandchildren and enjoyed
reading. working with his computer and feeding the birds.
A memorial service will he held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 16, at the
Huntingdon Presbyterian Church, Fifth and Mifflin streets, Huntingdon,
with the Revs. Richard E. Gardiner and Harold C. Williams Jr.
officiating.
Interment will be made in Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Walker Township,
Huntingdon.

Charles E. HOFFMAN Jr., 80, of 1417 Scott St., Huntingdon, died at 2:15
am. Thursday, March 13, 2003. at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital,
Huntingdon, following an extended illness.
Born Dec. 2, 1922, in Huntingdon, he was a son of the late Charles E.
Hoffman Sr. and Hazel (Baker) Hoffman Endres.
He was married to the former Verna Catherine Lover Feb. 16, 1946. Mrs.
Hoffman survives at their home.
Three daughters survive; Mrs. Gregory M. (Barbara A.) Travalio, Dublin,
Ohio; Mrs. J. Jeffrey (Patricia E.) Ciampa, Warwick, N.Y.; and Mrs.
Ronald M. (C. Dianne) Davino, Palmdale, Calif.
He is also survived by four grandchildren; Robert A. Ciampa of
Conshohocken; Sarah E. Travalio of Dublin, Ohio; Kyra B. Ciampa of
Warwick, N.Y.; and Elisa M. Travalio of Dublin, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers; Phyllis Neary,
Donald Hoffman and Robert Hoffman.
Mr. Hoffman was a member of Stone Church of the Brethren, Huntingdon.
He was a member of Frank P. Hommon Post No. 24, American Legion.
Huntingdon.
A member of the Class of 1940, he was a graduate of Huntingdon High
School.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943-1946,
attaining the rank of staff sergeant and serving with the 369 Ordnance
Maintenance Company.
Employed by SCI-Huntingdon as power plant supervisor, he retired in 1984
after 27 years service.
He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed gardening, fishing and hiking. He
also enjoyed carpentry and traveling.
Funeral services will he held at 10 am. Saturday, March 15, at the Stone
Church of the Brethren, 1701 Moore St., Huntingdon, with the Rev. Dale
W. Dowdy officiating.
Interment will be made in Holy Cross Cemetery, 245 Standing Stone Ave.,
Huntingdon, where full military honors will be accorded.

Carlton L. MILLER, 80, Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, died Monday, March
10, 2003. at the home following an extended illness.
Born Oct. 22, 1922. in Huntingdon, he was a son of the late Canton A.
and Mary Louise Miller.
He married the former Doris M. Rogers, Oct. 7, 1947, in Huntingdon. Mrs.
Miller preceded him in death May 28, 2001.
He is survived by one son, Rick Miller and wife, Pam, of Duncansville;
three daughters; Mary L. Miller, Duncansville; Mrs. John (Trudy) Colyer,
Altoona; and Mrs. Carlton (Ceri) Curtis, Williamsport; seven
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mr. Miller was of the Methodist faith.
He retired from the maintenance department of Stroehmans Bakery.
A graduate of Huntingdon High School, he was an Army and Air Force
veteran of World War II.
A devoted father, husband and grandfather, he will be greatly missed by
his family.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and watching sports and cooking
shows.
Private services were held at the convenience of the family and
interment was made in Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon.

Thelma M. (Sellers) MILLER, 76, of Village Way, Phoenixville, died
Thursday, March 13, 2003, at Phoenixville Hospital, Phoenixville. She
had lived in Phoenixville for the past three years.
Born Sept. 5, 1926, in Orbisonia, she was a daughter of the late
Newville N. and Olive (Black) Sellers.
She was married to James Robert Miller who survives in Phoenixville.
Two brothers and two sisters survive; Melvin L. Sellers, New Freedom;
LaRue S. Dell. Kimberton; Major Norman G. Sellers and wife, Shirley,
Baton Rouge, La.; and Vera O. Himes, Orhisonia.
Several nieces., nephews, grand-nieces and grandnephews survive.
Mrs. Miller was a member of the Centennial Evangelical Lutheran Church,
Kimberton.
She was active in the SPCA in New Carrollton, Md.
A 1945 graduate of Orbisonia High School, she was a homemaker
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 17, at the Martin
R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with the Rev. David Ort officiating.
Interment will be made in Orbisonia Cemetery, Orbisonia.

Earl E. KIFER, 85, of Blanton Gardens Retirement area, near Dallas,
Texas, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2003, in Dallas.
He was born Aug. 1, 1917, in Pennsylvania.
He is survived by his wife, Georgia Mae Kifer, whom he married in
November 1943 in Harlingen, Texas. They met in Wichita Falls in 1941
while Mr. Kifer was stationed there.
He is also survived by three sons; Ron Kifer, Greg Kifer, Mark Kifer;
daughters-in-law Sharron Kifer, Debbie Kifer and Karen Kifer;
grandchildren Jennifer Kifer, Jessika Kifer, Koyt Kifer, Kullen Kifer,
Kimberly Fretz, Eric Fretz, Katie Kifer and Jason Kifer.
One sister, Grace Capwell of Saxton survives.
He left Pennsylvania via train at the age of 17 and traveled to Kansas,
where he worked on a farm.
Upon returning to Pennsylvania, he worked in a steel mill in Pittsburgh
and attended a university.
He joined the U.S. Air Force in October 1941 and served in the European
Theatre of Operations throughout France, Germany and the European
countries, returning to the United States in 1945.
Following his discharge from the Air Force, he worked for a short time
on the Wichita Falls Police Force.
He received his bachelor of arts degree from Texas Wesleyan College (now
University) and a master of theology from Perkins School of Theology at
SMU. He earned a doctorate from Daniel
Baker University and an honorary doctor from Howard Payne College. He
did graduate work at the University of Edinburgh. Scotland.
He began his ministry on the 5-Point Circuit in the Wichita Falls
District and retired from the ministry as the district superintendent in
1983. He served several churches in the North Texas Conference of the
United Methodist Church in Chico, Roanoke, Denton, Wylie, Mesquite,
Greenville and Dallas.
He enjoyed painting and doing wood crafts.
Funeral services were held March 6 in Dallas.

Mary G. "Muddy" MAGLIERE, 78, formerly of 316 S. Division St., Mount
Union, and most recently a resident of Huntingdon Manor, Warm Springs
Avenue, Huntingdon, died at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, March 13. 2003, at J.C.
Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, following an extended illness.
Born April 5, 1924, in Huntingdon, she was a daughter of the late
Anthony and Mary Grace (Traphili) Pagana.
She was united in marriage to John J. Magliere Jan. 5,1947, at St.
Catherine’s Roman Catholic
Church, Mount Union. Mr. Magliere preceded her in death May 11, 1984.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary Louise Hileman and her husband,
David, of Mount Union.
She is also survived by three grandchildren; Tina Welch, John McKim and
Aaron Atherton; six great-grandchildren and one brother, Joe Giacobello
of Mount Union.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Gracie Cholewinski and Margarite
Pagana; a brother, Charles Pagana and an infant sister.
Mrs. Magliere was a member of St. Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church,
Mount Union, and the
Mount Union Chapter of the Catholic Daughters.
She graduated from Mount Union High School in 1944.
Mrs. Magliere was employed for 17 years by L. Greif Brothers
Manufacturing Co., Mount Union. For many years, she worked from her home
as the district registrar for the Pennsylvania Department of Vital
Records.
A funeral Mass will beheld at 10 am. Monday, March 17, at St.
Catherine’s Catholic Church, 205 W. Market St., Mount Union, with the
Rev. Elwood Figurelle officiating.
Committal will he made in St. Catherine s Catholic Cemetery,
Shirleysburg.

Helen F. SNEATH, 82, of R.R. 1, Box 373, Alexandria, died at 9:35 p.m.
Thursday, March 13, 2003, at Huntingdon Manor, Warm Springs Avenue,
Huntingdon, following a brief illness.
Born Aug. 25, 1929, in East Windsor, Ontario, Canada, she was a daughter
of the late Henry L. and Della (Lucier) Perron.
She was twice married; first to Russell A. Miller, May 13, 1939; then to
Robert H. Sneath Jan. 18, 1975. Mr. Miller preceded her in death April
4, 1967; Mr. Sneath preceded her in death Oct. 25, 1988.
She is survived by one brother and two sisters; Robert H. Perron and his
wife, Joyce, of Troy, Mich.; and Margaret D. LaFountain and Dorothy R.
Perron, both of Canton, Mich.
She is also survived by several in-laws, nieces and nephews.
One brother, Raymond A. Perron, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Sneath was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church,
Huntingdon.
She attended public schools in the state of Michigan.
She had resided in the Logan Township/Alexandria area since 1961.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 am. Monday, March 17, at Most Holy
Trinity Catholic Church, 524 Mifflin St., Huntingdon, with the Rev.
David J. Arseneault officiating.
Committal will be made in Holy Cross Cemetery, 245 Standing Stone Ave.,
Huntingdon.
