Dear Guy,
I didn't have any information on either the Tonkin or Pittman families in my files but I found some information in Caldwell's 1878 Atlas of Clearfield County Pennsylvania.
Page 208 had a reprinted directory for Burnside County Directory which lists Joseph Pittman as a Pennsylvania-born farmer who owns 10 acres of land and David Pittman (also born in Pennsylvania) as carpenter who owns one acre of land. The same directory lists Vincent Tonkins as a lumberman, born in England, who owns 150 acres of land. There is a wonderful drawing of the home of Vincent Tonkin in the same book on page. 44. Under the drawing, it states "Residence of Vincent Tonkin, Hickory Grove, Burnside Township, Clearfield County, PA. Finally, there is a map on page 95 that shows property owned by V. Tonkin in Cherry Tree. You can find that same map on the Internet. Here is how to get there:
1) go to www.rootsweb.com/~paindian
2) click on "County Societies" on the left-hand bar
3) click on "Historical and Genealogical Societies of Indiana County" (above the photo)
4) go to the bottom of the screen and click on "Gateway to Resources"
5) click on the "Interactive Map of Indiana County" - (this is also a good map)
6) click on "Montgomery Township" (it's on the right hand side of the map)
7) go down under the map itself and you will see "Some Historic Towns and Boroughs of Montgomery Twp."
8) click on "Cherry Tree"
Hope this helps!
Ann
