Most of the Bartlebaugh/Purtlebaughs found in Ohio at that time came from
the Gore, Back Creek area of Virginia. Since our John and Mathias( b.
1800) were listed on 1880 census ( by son Isaiah for John and Alexander for
Mathias) as born in Virginia we think there the first or second generation
in our our family will be found for all the people with the surname
Bartlebaugh
and Purtlebaugh. Before that was maybe Bartenbach/Bardenbach. The name
was made up something after 1750.
