Hello Louise,

You might want to check for early roots of your Greenwood family in the
area which is today Greenwood Twp., Juniata Co. PA. This Greenwood Twp.
was established in 1767 while the area was part of Cumberland Co.
Records in the Cumberland County seat, Carlisle PA 17013, should be
examined for mention of Joseph Greenwood. Before 1750 that same area
would have been within Lancaster Co., so if Joseph obtained a warrant or
patent deed for land two or more years before he was married, it might
be found in the Lancaster County seat, Lancaster PA 17602.

Within a generation some settlers of the lower Juniata Valley migrated
westward through the restrictive "Narrows" and on up the Juniata River
Valley. At the dates you mention in your query, Belleville, now in Union
Twp., Mifflin Co., would also have been within Cumberland Co. Since
Mifflin Co. was not established until 1789, it is probably futile trying
to find records of your Greenwoods before that date in the Mifflin
County seat at Lewistown PA 17044. On the other hand, descendants
following the first two generations of Greenwoods might very well show
up in Mifflin Co. records after 1789.

The index to BIOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF JUNIATA VALLEY, Volume 1
(1897) lists mention of the following Greenwoods on page 326: Alfred W.,
Ralph, and William. I regret I have only the index, not the first volume
of this set, so I can tell you no more about these men.
