Subject: Polk's Carbondale Directories and Morcoms
Date: Sat, 8 Nov 97 15:04 GMT0
On a very rushed one day visit to Scranton we photocopied a number of
pages from Polk's Carbondale City Directories for a sample of years
between 1920 and 1988. These have been very helpful in our Morcom one name
study.
However in our haste we omitted to check some details about the way in
which Polk recorded and displayed information and we would be most
grateful for help on any of the following points:
Where did the Polk editors get their information? Was it from electoral
rolls - maybe this would explain why they listed one person who had died
three years before his name was listed. How complete is the coverage of
the adult population? Did people have any choice whether they were
included or not?
When did Polk change from just recording Carbondale to including
neighbouring towns?
Which towns are identified by the following abbreviations in editions
after about the mid 1960s: "C","D", "E" and "M"? What does "RD 1" mean in
an address?
In the copies we made of the 1980 and 1988 directories there is a circle
within a circle against some names. What does this mean?
We would also be most interested to exchange information with anyone else
researching the Morcoms.
