Dear listers,
Thanks to all of you who responded to my query about the 1st Welsh
Baptist Church in Scranton. You've given me some very useful information
that I will follow up on as best I can.
Her maiden name was Duckworth and she was born in England in 1827, but
at the time of her death, my ggg-grandmothe's name was Alice MARSH. She
and her husband were in their 90s when they died of asphyxiation from a
malfunctioning gas heater at 124 Chestnut St. one December night in
1917.
At some point (I assume), she was married to a John HOWORTH (or
Howarth), who was my ggg-grandfather. They had a son named James, born
24 July 1872. I
would like to know anything about Howorth as well as when she married
Marsh, if she had other Howorth children, and anything else. She is
buried with Howorth in the Washburn St. Cemetery because a second cousin
of mine either has or at least has seen the cemetery deed.
Curiously, another person buried in that plot is one Johnathan W. SMITH.
Do any of you know of him? The 1870 census shows that John Howorth was
living in the home of Catherine and Thomas Smith and working as a
stationary engineer (in the mines?). That might account for the Smith
connection, I guess.
If any of you can add to my knowledge of any of these folks, I'd be glad
to hear from you. Happy hunting.
