Subject: LDS genealogy helps now for sale
Date: Sun, 8 Nov 1998 19:52:09 -0600

Hello:

Just learned that seven genealogy helps are now available for sale from the
LDS Church to help genealogical researchers. Some of these items are new,
and more are expected in the near future.

Most of the below items should soon be available for you to use and/or view
at your local LDS Family History Center at no charge; you can, however,
purchase these to use at your home on your own computer.)

Will provide the description available to me; sorry this will be lengthy.
Call 1-800-537-5971 to ask for further information; please do not e-mail
me questions regarding these items. With the exception of "Personal
Ancestral File (which I own and enjoy), I have not tried any of these items
and cannot answer questions about same or speak to the completeness. Hope
I don't offend anyone by sharing here, but it's easier for me to type the
complete list one time and then share with other lists for other
localities.

Here goes:

(1) Family History Source Guide (50176)
A compilation of more than 150 research guides that are produced by the LDS
Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. This software assists
those who know basic information about their ancestors but need to search
original sources to complete their family records. It includes research
outlines, address lists, letter-writing guides, blank forms, census
worksheets, research guides, maps, word meanings, and a function that
identifies the best subjects to search in the LDS Family History Library
Catalog. Runs on Windows 95 or Windows NT. Price: U.S. $10.

(2) Vital Records-North America (50029)
An index of church, civil, and other record collections for the United
States and Canada recorded between 1620 and 1888. The index of nearly five
million names fills seven compact discs. Six discs contain marriage
information; the seventh contains birth and christening information. Some
areas are more completely represented than others. Runs on Windows 95 or
Windows NT. Price U.S. $19.

(3) Vital Records Index - British Isles (50028)
An index of vital records for England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland
recorded between 1538 and 1888. The index of approximately five million
names fills five compact discs with records from parish registers, civil
registration;, and other record collections from the British Isles. Not
all counties are represented; some are more completely represented than
others. Runs on Windows 95 or Windows NT. Price: U.S. $15.

(4) Personal Ancestral File Companion 2.0 (CD: 50041; 3-1/2" diskette: 25060)
A product that prints family information from Personal Ancestral File 3.0
in high-quality charts and reports. Users may print family information in
several formats: family group records; pedigree charts; and ancestor and
descendant charts, including circular and fan-shaped charts. Users may
also compile their Personal Ancestral File database in a registry-book
format, complete with indexes. Version 2.0 offers four new reports. Runs
on Windows 3.1 or higher. Price: U.S. $10.

(5) Personal Ancestral File, Version 3.0M (35821)
A computer program that helps compile and organize family history
information. Version 3.0M better accommodates diacritics and special
characters, helps simplify LDS temple submissions (I.G.I.. or the
International Genealogical Index), and has features to improve the quality
of information submitted to the LDS Church. Runs on DOS. Price: U.S.
$15.
(NOTE: There is a 2.3.1 version for Mac, with different features. Ask the
price when you call as it is higher).

(6) 1851 British Census (50096)
An index to the census records of Devon, Norfolk, and Warwick Counties
only. The index contains about 1.5 million names and lists a person's
name, relationship to head of household, birthplace, sex, age, occupation,
and residence. Families are listed as they were enumerated in the census.
Runs on Windows 3.1 or higher. Price: U.S. $5. (That price is NOT a
typo, but could it be correct!!!!????? Be sure to ask if you phone.)

(7) Australian Vital Records Index, 1788-1905 (50095)
An index to records from New South Wales (1788-1888), Tasmania (1803-99),
Victoria (1837-88), and Western Australia (1841-1905). The index contains
about 4.5 million records of births, christenings, marriages, and deaths,
and includes an index reference that can be used to obtain a certificate
from the state civil registration office. In Australia, this file is
available only in LDS Family History Centers, due to contractual
limitations. Runs on Windows 3.1 or higher. Price: U.S. $20.

Good luck in your searches, and I hope I haven't offended anyone for
posting non-Pennsylvania information here. Your ancestors, however, might
be found in the above.
