My great grandfather Patrick SULLIVAN was born circa 1843 in Ireland. He
moved with his parents and sibling to Wales where they settled before
immigrating to the Northeast Pennsylvania area. According to the 1861 Census
of Monmouthsire in the parish of Bedwelty and the hamlet of Manmoel a SULLIVAN
family with the elder Patrick SULLIVAN (51), wife Catherine (50), Jeremia (18)
Patrick (17) , John (14) and Mary Ann (10) SULLIVAN lived at Number 4 Row 48
Manmoel, Sirhowy, Bedwelty, Monmouthsire, Manmoel . The younger Patrick
SULLIVAN (my great grandfather) met a married Ellen CUMMINGS. The CUMMINS
family John CUMMINGS and his wife Ellen O'BRIEN were born in Ireland. Their
children Michael, Richard, Andrew and Ellen CUMMINS (my great grandmother)
lived at 13 Furnace Row Rhymney in the Parish of Bedwelty, Wales. From
naturalization papers I have been able to find that the younger Patrick left
Liverpool, England aboard the SS Mancester and arrived at the Port of New York
7 September 1865. I have been able to trace some of the SULLIVAN family once
they arrived in Pennsylvania. They settled in Old Forge, Minooka, Taylor and
Scranton and the surrounding areas. A good part of the family settled in the
early 1900s in Taylor, PA. Patrick SULLIVAN and Ellen CUMMINGS had 15
children.; When Ellen CUMMINGS SULLIVAN died at the age of 80 in 1927she was
survived by 50 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. She was known as
"The grandmother of Taylor" Some of the associated families include but are
definitely not limited to, GERRITY, STANTON, WEISS, SHIELDS, LAFFEY, COSTELLO,
GRIFFIN, FELTON, SALERNO, UNGER, GABRIEL, STAFFORD, BLACK, DAVIS, LYNCH,
CROWE, LAYDEN, LABER, GALLAGHER, CUMMINGS, SHEA, DESKIN, JENNINGS, TOMASETTI
and many many more. Of the children who survived most were female-Ellen,
Margaret, Nora (Honora), Mary, Loretta, Catherine, Cecilia, Elizabeth and
Bridget; males-John, Andrew, Joseph and Edward born between 1865-1895. Some
of the family settled in Redham, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and other points
unknown to me at this time. As you can imagine I am looking for any
information regarding my ancestors and their descendants. While I am not
sure, there are stories that this SULLIVAN line originated in County CORK but
I do not have any proof of that. Looking forward to a positive response from
fellow researchers. Thanking you all in advance for reading this rather long
and detailed tale. Sincerely, Walton J. Sullivan at
