A few members of my O'DONNELL line left Scranton ca. 1900-1910 to take
up work in steel mills near Buffalo, NY. I had always thought it an odd
coincidence that they left Lackawanna County, PA to live in a town
called Lackawanna, NY.
Having mentioned that to someone recently, they responded "This is more
than a coincidence. You ought to find out more about the Lackawanna
Steel Co. Your folks could well have worked for the company in PA and
moved to help open the new plant. The plant later became the Bethlehem
Steel Co. Note again the PA tie."
He also stated that the town of Lackawanna was founded about 1905, just
about the time that my kin went there.
That sounded interesting enough to follow up on further. If nothing
else, steel mills needed coal to fire the furnaces so there may well be
a connection. Anyone have any knowledge of a Lackawanna Steel
connection in the Scranton area back then?
