The information varies from year to year but basically includes:
name of each party, age, birthplace (usually just state), residence, and
occupation, parent's names, birthplace and residence. Previous marriages
are noted with the date and reason the marriage ended.
>From 1905-early 1913, the names of parents were not included and are
somewhat hit and miss for earlier records, although after 1912 the mother's
maiden name is usually listed. All applications are signed by the clerk of
courts and by the person performing the ceremony; this means that there can
be 4 different dates: the date of application, the date the application was
returned to the court after the wedding, the date the clergyman, JP,
alderman, or magistrate signed the application and the date of the ceremony.
Sometimes the signature of a parent or guardian can be found if the bride or
groom was under age 20 or 21. There are four locations to check the name:
The clerk's entry, the signature of the bride and groom in two locations,
and in the affidavit as entered by the marrying official. It is not
uncommon to find conflicting spellings in the various entries.
The affidavit at the bottom of the application contains the names of the
persons married, and the aforementioned signatures of the person performing
the ceremony. It is vary rare to see any religious affiliation noted in the
affidavit; however there is an index to ministers on the Luzerne Co. USGEN
Web page under church history that may allow you to cross reference that
information.
