Hi all, and thanks for the information on the Eddy Creek Mines. I used to
visit Throop quite often, and think I could find it when I go for another
visit.
For those of you who asked and have offered to help, here is the information
that I currently have (which isn't much, unfortunately).
Grandfather = Stephen MATAY (May 3, 1893 - May 25, 1966) no information
provided for his parents. He is buried at St. John the Baptist Cemetery,
Throop
grandmother= Anna MECHRINA ( Dec 24, 1899 - July 4, 1937) ( her parents are
listed as Michael MARSHEMKO and Anna EURAKO on her death certificate. The
information was provided by my grandfather. Buried at St. John the Baptist,
Throop.
They had 8 children as follows:
Mary - born Jan 1922 - Cambria County
Anna - infant child - deceased. I have been told that she is buried in
Cambria County
Agnes - born Jan 1925 - Cambria County
Helen - born March 1927 - Throop
Catherine Todloski - born April 1929 - died September 1987 - buried at
St. John the Baptist Church, with parents.
Frank - born Jan 23, 1931 - died September 1975 ( this is my father)
Joseph - born March 12, 1933
George - born April 1935. - died January 1983.
I am having a tough time finding where my grandparents were married. I had
assumed it was in Cambria County since this is where their first three
children were born. Sometime before March 1927 they moved to Throop where
they remained until they passed away. The family home was located on Line
Street in Throop, and I have an aunt that still lives in the home ( I think).
My grandfather had a sister named Susie SMERCAK, who lived in North
Tarrytown, NY. She passed away on April 14, 1939. I have been in touch with
one of her relatives, but they can't really provide much additional
information.
My aunt remember three cousins, Rita Mechrina _____ who lived in Taylor, PA,
Helen Mechrina GRASSI, Piscatawy, NJ and Jeanne Mechrina KOPECHNY from
Swoyersville, PA. Their parents were Helen and John MECHRINA. I have not
been able to find any additional information on these people. There was
also an uncle Mike MECHRINA from Swoyersville.
I was able to locate some additional MATAY members in the Cambria County
Census for 1920, but they are not members of my "immediate" family, however,
I would assume that they are some relation. They also came over from
Slovakia. If anyone wants this information, please feel free to send me an
e-mail. Also, I have been told my an uncle that the name used to be spelled
MATEJ.
Any help, comments or additional information that anyone can provide would be
very welcome. As I said before, I am very new to this, and any tips would be
appreciated.
