Hello list,

I have to agree that the list seems to have digressed a bit. However, I
also have to agree with the writer who pointed out what they felt were
"mistakes." A bit more diplomacy might have gone alot furhter, however.

When I first joined this list I made a few mistakes myself, and lets face
it, who among us hasn't, but a few tips were offered to me that bear
repeating. I don't want to sound preachy, but these tips helped me to do
this correctly and maybe they will help someone else too.

1) When posting a query, please put surnames in all caps, many people only
scan subject lines or the body for names that they recognize and delete
those messages that don't appear to pertain. If a name is lower case or not
capitalized at all then someone might miss it and it may be the one person
that has the info that you who just deleted your message.
3) Try to use the same punctuation and grammar rules you would for writing
a letter, keeping in mind that some of our fellow researchers may be older
and may not have the patience to try and figure out todays e-mail shorthand.
I know my mother would have a hard time with it, never mind my
grandmother.
2) Be polite to fellow listers. Their stories may not always make much
sense, but we all are going on hearsay for part of what we're doing and
cutting someone's stories to shreds on a public forum might embarass them
out of posting any info. There is always a way to reach someone without
having it posted to the list and thereby avoiding any embarrasment. I know
because this happened to me and it sort of sours you on participating.
(Don't worry, I bounced back nicely.) And none of us are here for that.

This is a great list and I really enjoy being part of it. Let's all try to
help each other.
