Neighborhood Events, January 1929
3- Hugo Enslin, 50, chef Hotel Sterling, Wilkes-Barre, suicided by shooting
(Peg's comment: Hey, folks, WAKE up- this one is interesting......)
4- Mrs. Anna Mantos, 19, said she shot and killed Charles Morelli, 30, of
West Wyoming, who was prowling about her (house in) Exeter and would not
leave.
5- Salvatore Sabotti Manto and Charles Palcearo, arrested in connection with
the Morelli murder at Exeter, both made confessions of crime which Mrs.
Manto had also confessed she committed. (Peg's comment: makes you kind of
want to look that one up and read it, huh?)
6- Home of Charles Waisklis at Oregon Heights, Pittston, dynamited by
Anthony Krushnaukas, who confessed crime;
(Peg's comment: Sure he didn't kill Charles Morelli, too? Anyway, moving
on....)
W.H. Welsh, 57, of Nicholson, died at State hospital, Scranton, from
auto accident injuries at Tunkhannock;
Harvey Birchard, 40, former deputy register and recorder of Susquehannah
county, died at Montrose.
9- Louis Hohnsheldt, 28, hanged himself in North water Gap, bedcause of ill
health;
Joseph Petruno, 40, killed at Pocono summit, when gasoline section car
he was on was struck by Lackawanna train.
10- Mrs. Edwin Casey, 69, burned to death in fire which destroyed her home
near Cooley, Wayne county.
11- Gurlym Frances, 60, daughter Blodwyn, 23, and son Enoch, 26, asphyxiated
by escaping gas fumes in home at 49 Ninth street, Wyoming.
13- James Brennan, 38, found frozen to death on river bank at Wilkes-Barre.
14- Joe Scotcilli, 37, shot and killed at home of August Lauri, at
Hillsdale, near Wilkes-Barre, murderer escaping;
Wm. Shane, 75, D. & H. engineer, dropped dead in Laurel Line station at
Plains;
Harry W. Seamans, 56, vice-president Nicholson National Bank, died at
home in Factoryville.
15- Home of Cabaldo Saparito, on Market Street, Pittston, and two adjoining
houses damaged by dynamite blast.
16- James McManaman, 54, Jersey Central engineer, badly wounded by two
burglars chased by himself and a fellow railroad man at Ashley;
Mrs. E. E. Rozelle, 88, died at Brooklyn, Susquehanna county;
Josephine Loring who shot and killed Russel Butler at Sterling, Wayne
county, sent to penetentiary for not less than ten years.
21- Three mine squeezes occurred during day in Baltimore No. 5 coliery at
Wilkes-Barre, resulting in injuries to eleven men.
22- W. Alfred Valentine, of Wilkes-Barre, named by governor Fisher to fill
vacancy on Luzerne bench caused by death of Judge Kosak;
Robert A. Quinn, 65, vice-president Susquehanna coal Co., died from
fractured skull in fall at Wilkes-Barre General hospital.
23- Verdict against Rinaldo Cappellini, former local mine workers head,
awarded W. P. Djnewskie, of Plymouth, in slander suit.
24- Jospeh A. McGlynn, silk manufacturer, found dead in garage at Kingston
from monoxide gas.
25- John Ritzel, 70, held at Wilkes-Barre, for murder of daughter, Mrs. Anna
Dempsey, 35, whom he fatally shot Dec. 26.
26- Thomas Stephenson, 10, died from injuries received on railroad at
Avoca.
27- Mrs. Andrew Gaffikin, mother of Rev. P.J. Gaffikin, of St. vincent's
church, North Sranton, died at Nanticoke.
28- Charged with violation of School code, five directors of Exeter school
board were oused by the Luzerne county court;
home of Mrs. Frank black, widow of two weeks, burned with content at
Maplewood, Wayne county, family narrowly escaping death.
29- Mrs. Nathatniel Fitch, 85, Lake Winola, died.
31- Joseph Mazelweski, 30, Duryea, killed at work for Barnum Coal Co.
Accidental deaths
1-Mrs. Henry Miller, 527 Mary Street, died from injuries in fall down
stairs..
John Kalbus, 42, Old Forge, died from injuries when run down by auto in
West Scranton.
3- August Kohn, 51, Hickory Street, Lackawanna railroad fireman, killed at
nay Aug.
6- Anna Ford, 2, 1314 South Main Avenue, fatally burned by upsetting pan of
boiling water.
7- Angeline Krist, 4, West Lackawanna avenue, died from burns.
8- Alec Frazer, 44, Peckville, died from injuries when run over by his own
auto.
10- Ralph Hunter, 71, Carbondale, died from injuries suffered when hit by
auto in Carbondale.
11- Adam Bu(could be "a")tcavage, 17, Ross avenue, killed by monoxide gas
while working on
auto in a Shawnee avenue garage.
John Simpson, 55, 425 S. Main avenue, struck by street car on Jan. 5,
died.
14- Henry Wasilchak, 38, Jessup dairyman, killed when his truck skidded on
Montdale road.
road; Mrs. Samson Maynard, 88, Mill City, died at State hospital from
injuries in fall.

17- Michael Kaliposky, 23, Simpson, killed in American Welding Co., plant
when squeezed between machines.
26- Edward Joyce, 10, of 1216 Philo street, killed while coasting on Philo
street when his sled hit auto.
