Here is part 1 of the information given for the names of the Moscow
settlers listed in G. Ellis Miller's "Drinker's Beech":
ACKERLY, Hiram - Born 1830. Opened the DL&W Hotel on the southwest
corner of Main and Church Streets in Moscow but did not remain in
business very long because his family is given only once in the
census records. His wife was Sarah, born 1836. They had two children
in 1870: Frank W., 5; and George R., 3.
BARTLESON, Bartle - Born 1852. Came from Sterling to Springbrook as a
saw mill laborer. In 1880 his wife was Polly J., born 1853. They had
two children: Lucy M., b. 1877; and Floyd E., b. 1878.
BECK, William K. (1849-1930) - Born in Stockport, Pa., a son of
Thomas and Catherine MACK BECK. He married in 1870 to Hannah M.
(1850-1923), daughter of Albert G. and Mary E. ELLTING HOLLISTER of
Hollisterville. Their children were: Mary E (1871-1917), wife of Bion
A. MILLER, Moscow; Alberta M. (1873-1923), wife of Dr. Frank BUDD,
Worcester, Mass.; Daisy M., wife of John SCOTT, Moscow; Nellie M.
(1876-1958), wife of John SCOTT, Moscow [sic]; Thomas A., who married
May A. FISHER; Karl H. (1879-1909), Moscow, who married Bertha
VanBRUNT; Kathryn F., wife of Frank ROGERS, Glenburn, Pa.; and Grace.
BUCKINGHAM, George - Born 1824 and his wife, Sarah, b. 1826, lived at
Dunnings. Their children were: Jerome J. (1850-1923); Byron, b. 1852;
Burton (1862-1930); Eugene, b. 1866; Mary, twin to Eugene; and
Jennie, b. 1869.
BUCKINGHAM, Jerome J. - Child of George Buckingham (above), he
married Ada R. (1857-1936), daughter of William B. and Caroline DePEW
ROBINSON. They lived at Dunnings for several years and then moved to
Scranton. Their children were: Edna P, wife of Robert VanBRUNT; Alice
(1878-1957), wife of George B. CAREY, Factoryville, Pa.; and Blanche,
wife of Adelbert SLOTE, Scranton.
BURKHART, Henry - Born in Bavaria in 1830. His wife, Julia
(1824-1895), b. in Saxony. They lived in Dunnings. Their children
were: Charles J. (1856-1920), who married Luthena PETERS (1854-1897);
Phoebe, b. 1858; Sarah (1863-1941); Jacob, b. 1864; and Elizabeth, b.
1866.
CALLENDAR, Phillip - Born 1830. Proprietor of a dry goods and grocery
store in Madisonville for a few years. His wife was Mary, b. 1836.
Leonard HORTON, b. 1854, was his store clerk.
CATTERSON, Alexander B. (1835-1910), Moscow, was a son of Robert and
Mary ORR Catterson of Sterling, Wayne Co., Pa. His wife was Catherine
E. (1846-1897), daughter of Isaac and Mehitable DUNNING DEPEW. Their
children were: Alden D., b. 1868, a physician of Denver, Colorado;
Walton (1870-1939), Moscow, who married Emma F. (1872-1932), daughter
of Calvin and Sarah POTTER WADERMAN; and Forrest B. (1877-1878).
CAREY, Benjamin Parker (1819-1873) - A carpenter and the son of Minor
Carey of Old Providence Township (Scranton). He was the first settler
at Carey's Corner (Quicktown) near Madisonville. His wife was Barbara
LUTS (1823-1914). Their children were: Mary, b. 1847 (Mrs. KELLAM);
Silas, b. 1850; Elizabeth, b. 1853, wife of William J. SMITH;
Mehitable (1855-1924), wife of William P. KETCHAM; Lucy, b. 1857; and
Ruey Ellen (1860-1913).
CAREY, John - A jeweler and the son of Samuel Carey of Old Providence
Township, he was born in 1837. He lived near Moscow for several
years. His wife, Amanda, was b. in 1839. Their children were: Clara
M., b. 1866; Edson 2. [sic], b. 1869; Anna, b. 1875; and Harrington,
b. 1877.
CLOCK, Ebenezer - Born 1808, married in 1834 to Elizabeth KIMBLE, b.
1815 in Ithaca, NY and came to Hamlin, Pa., in 1840 and removed to
Covington Township in 1869. Their children were: Mary June, b. 1835,
wife of Hallstead HARRIS; Lydia M. (1837-1844); William J., b. 1838,
Dover, NJ, who married Elizabeth ADAMS; Nelson J. (1840-1844); Abram
L. (1842-1863), a Civil War casualty; Charles H. (1844-1932), Dover,
NJ, who married Sarah E. HOLDER; and John N., b. 1856. Ebenezer
Clock's first wife died in 1869 and he remarried at Moscow to Sarah
Jane Leroy MOFFAT.
DECKER, Andrew (1818-1870) and his wife, Hannah, b. 1819, lived at
Maple Lake. Their children were: Joseph, b. 1843; Jacob, twin to
Joseph; Sarah J. (1845-1918), wife of Jacob O. WILLIAMS, Ashland,
Neb.; Charles, b. 1852; and William (1855-1930).
DECKER, Joseph, [son of Andrew (above)], lived at Maple Lake, later
moving to Clarks Summit, Pa. His wife was Mary E., b. 1851, daughter
of John A. and Lucinda DAVIS of Moscow. Their children were: Charles
(1875-1933), who married Elsie WHEELER (1877-1958), Mrs. Warren W.
Wheeler; Arthur W. (1879-1959), who married Cora WHEELER; Emma J.,
twin to Arthur W., wife of Francis B. WHEELER; Bertha M., b. 1881,
wife of Benjamin F. WHEELER; and Fred S. (1894-1959), Maplewood, Pa.
DECKER, Charles, [son of Andrew (above)], married Mary Jane, b. 1849,
daughter of Barnabas and Sarah RODNEY. They were the parents of:
Florence, b. 1876, wife of Alfred Kreidler; and Hiram, b. 1878.
EHRGOOD, Emery J., Moscow miller, was b. 1833, a son of William and
Mary INK Ehrgood of Bethlehem, Pa. His wife was Lavina, b. 1832.
Their children were: Oscar D., b. 1856; L.E. (1860-1940); Anna A., b.
1861, wife of Charles M. Lancaster; Nettie M., b. 1869; and Franklin
E., b. 1875.
ENGLISH, Daniel H. (1805-1891) and his wife, Maria SNYDER (1810-1879)
lived in Covington Township. Their children were: Norman R.
(1846-1925); Ellen, b. 1849; Lucy, b. 1851; and Horace, b. 1853.
ENGLISH, Norman R., [son of Daniel (above)], married Cassie, b. 1856,
daughter of John Fred HOLLER. Their children were: Minnie, b. 1872,
wife of William BAISLEY, and, after his death, Charles T. STONE;
Norman, b. 1874, who married Della SAYER; Asa, b. 1876; and Curtis,
b. 1878.
FRACE, Ebenezer, b. 1840, and his wife, Maria, b. 1849, lived at
Dunnings. Their children were: William H., b. 1867; Ella, b. 1869;
Daniel (1870-1928) who married Ida BARCLAY; and Marshall, b. 1873.
FREEMAN, Calvin W., b. 1843, and his wife, Mary J. LANCE (1849-1916)
lived at Moscow. Their children were: Benjamin, b. 1864; Louise, b.
1869; and Ida, twin to Louise.
FREEMAN, Benjamin, [son of Calvin (above)], and his wife, Mary SEESE,
Moscow, were the parents of: Theodore, Violet, Mabel, wife of Claud
T. STONE; Luther, and Edward (1908-1948).
GOLDEN, DAVID, b. 1842, and his wife, Ellen, b. 1844, lived in
Covington Township. Their children were: Anna, b. 1865; Ida, b. 1867;
Catherine, b. 1871; Ellen, b. 1873; Thomas, b. 1878; and John, b.
1879.
GRAY, Charles M. (1829-1894) and his wife, Mary J., b. 1838, lived at
Maple Lake. Their children were: Charles, b. 1858; Emma, b. 1861;
Alvira, b. 1864; Albert W., b. 1867; Eveline, b. 1871; Steven, b.
1873; Ida, b. 1876; George W. (1878-1884); and Thankful, wife of
Sebastian ROZELL.
GROMLICH, John, was b. in 1832 in Bucks County, Pa., and was a member
of Washburn, Norman and Company, lumber manufacturers. He formed a
partnership with Daniel STAPLES and together they built a saw mill
near Daleville at what later became known as Staplesville. Their
business was known as Gromlich and Staples. A few years later Staples
bought out Gromlich and the latter moved to Maplewood, Pa. John
Gromlich's wife was Sarah SMITH (1832-1902). Their children were:
Alice, b. 1854; Susan (1857-1926), wife of Franklin SCHRECK; John, b.
1859; Jerry, twin to John; Jacob, b. 1862, who married Carrie
MASTERS; Mary, b. 1864; Mahlon, b. 1867; Anna, b. 1869; David;
George; Gertrude; and Sadie.
HARDENBURGH, Thomas B. (1826-1900) and his wife, Mary S. (1827-1893)
lived at Dunnings. Their children were: Benjamin F. (1852-1929);
Edward S. (1856-1930); and Carrie, b. 1859.
HARDENBURGH, Benjamin, [son of Thomas (above)], married Rose Ella
(1860-1928) daughter of James M. and Mary Ann SWARTZ RHODES. A
daughter, Jessie (1882-1953) was the wife of Edward B. ROGERS,
Elmhurst.
HENRY, Benjamin, b. 1845 in Canada, married Margaret (1851-1882),
daughter of George F. and Eva DINGS FINCH and lived in Covington
Township. Their children were: Estella, b. 1871; Martha, b. 1876; and
Nellie, b. 1879.
HENRY, William, b. 1839, a brother of Benjamin Henry, also lived in
Covington Township. His wife was Elizabeth, b. 1849. Their children
were: Emma, b. 1868; Edgar, b. 1871; Thaddeus, b. 1874; and Bessie,
b. 1876.
HOKREIN, Lorenz, b. 1829 in Bavaria, and his wife, Anna, b. 1838 in
Prussia, lived on Cooper (now Lincoln) Street, Moscow, where he
labored as a shoe maker. Mr. Hokrein was the father of two sons by a
former marriage: Lorenz (1850-1930); and Charles (1859-1896). The
children of Lorenz and Anna Hokrein were: Casper, b. 1866; Mary, b.
1868; Rosanna, b. 1871; Elizabeth, b. 1873; Lous, b. 1875; and John,
b. 1877.
HOKREIN, Charles, [son of Lorenz (above)], married Rosilla
(1862-1945), daughter of Eratus and Mary Ann BIESECKER EDWARDS. Their
children were: George W., Elmhurst; Walter H.; and Elnora
(1893-1926), wife of William R. BEERS, Moscow.
