I realize that two answers have been posted to the list already, but it
irritates me that both are incorrect. The 'furnaces' (now an historical
site off Cedar Avenue) were extinguished long before 1920. In fact they
were not in service when the Laurel Line was built around 1903 near that
location. Also that is the time frame when the Lackawanna Coal and Iron
operation completed their move to the Buffalo, NY, area. LC&I was further
south however - below the Saquoit (sp?) Silk Mill, which I believe is
verifiable on the 1873 map. The only true way to provide a correct answer
would be to get a business listing of foundries from the 1920 City Directory
which I will do on Tuesday evening.
