Subject: [PA-LAC] GENERAL GENEALOGICAL QUESTION
Date: Sat, 5 Jul 2003 20:00:52 EDT
This question does not just pertain to the Lackawanna area but I thought
maybe some of you experts could help me.
I am trying to input data into my Familytreemaker file and I am coming across
many individuals with no last name. In addition, I have found some people in
my file who are married with marriage info and neither first or last name is
given for their spouse/spouses. And I also have some with no first name.
I do not know how to record this info in my file. When I write to
genealogy.com for their help, I get answers that do not relate to my specific questions.
I asked them these same questions and I got the following answer.
"Surnames or last names are not used in all cultures. The way to handle this
is to place two backslash characters together, with no space between them at
the end of the name. If a woman's surname is unknown, record her as Sarah
Jane [-?-]."
That info above would help me with no surname, but if I have, for example, a
John Brown who was married to ___________ (no first or last name) on Sept. 12,
1852 and they had children, etc., how do I indicate that I have neither first
or last name for his spouse.
I am also coming across no first names.
What does everyone else do with these problems?
I know someone out there has some answers.
