Hello Curly

The details can be found in William D. Jones (1993)
Wales in America: Scranton and the Welsh 1860-1920,
University of Scranton Press. A passage in the book in
concerned with the 1871 "Welsh Strike" (pp.51-73) The
strike was a bitter industrial dispute that resulted
in violence and bloodshed. The death of Benjamin Davis
and a fellow Welsh miner Daniel Jones occurred on the
17 May 1871 (pp.67-68). Davis and Jones were members
of the WBA (The Workingmen's Benevolent Association -
an early form of trade unionism).

The state militia were escorting a group of Irish
workers home after working in the Briggs' Shaft Mine.
The party was led by William Scranton and included a
group of labourers armed with Remington rifles. They
proceeded along Luzerne St., Hyde Park and Near
Oddfellows Corner, the junction of Luzerne St. and
South Main Ave the party was confronted by a group of
about 200 Welsh strikers who blocked the road.
Following heated exchanges between the two groups one
of the labourers, Micheal Cairns, fired and killed
Benjamin Davis and Daniel Jones in the crowd.

If you find that this is possibly your Benjamin Davis
I suggest you get hold of a copy of the book through
your local library.

More is mentioned of Jones than Davis but further
information may also be gleamed from the main source
The Scranton Morning Republican (18 May 1871).

Hope this proves useful
