You have been given some expert advice elsewhere on the list. I live in a
town full of history, and am on the board of the oldest library in the US. I
talked to the restoration curator about preserving old papers recently. Her
answer was if it's an old newspaper - you can't preserve it. Best to get a
color Xerox made, very carefully, and keep that as a document. Old letters
and documents were on better grades of pape and will survive better.
I get color Xeroxes made of every historic document we have on our genealogy.
I use color because it faithfully reproduces the sepia-tones of old photos
and even captures the yellowed color of old paper. Once framed on the wall,
these have an authentic look, and the originals can be preserved in acid-free
paper away from light as is proper. With photos, color Xeroxing has another
aspect; you can have the pictures enlarged and quite amazing details emerge
sometimes from these enlargements. In fact the copies are sometimes better
than the original pictures. These are what we frame and hang on the wall;
the others are kept safe.
