FolksÂ…

In 1755 the French and Indian War, which was taking place far from
Lancaster County, made it presence nearby when Indians pillaged
Scots-Irish settlements on the eastern bank of the Susquehannah River.
Communities within the County quickly organized companies of
"associators" to defend its communities. One of those communities was
Colerain Township. The following is quoted from Ellis & Evans History of
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (Philadelphia: Everts & Peck, 1883), p.
735 regarding the Colerain associators.

The early settlers in and before 1756 were Robert Anderson, farmer;
Joshua Anderson, farmer; Joshua Anderson, Jr., farmer; and Samuel
Anderson, Esq., who in 1756 raised a company of associators during the
French and Indian war. Joshua Anderson was his lieutenant and John
Barkley was ensign. The company was composed entirely of citizens of
Colerain and vicinity:

*Joseph Miller continued to be a justice from about the year 1755 on
through the Revolution, and was one of the justices of the Court of
Common Pleas. He was a very prominent person, and was an ardent patriot.
He administered the Oath of Allegiance to those who resided in Colerain
and vicinity. [Joseph Miller's name appears frequently in the Deed Books
regarding Oaths of Allegiance, as per my previous message to this list.]
