Hi,

I need help figuring out where to look next based on the following information.

Samuel Caldwell ELDER married Virginia A. DIXON in St.Joseph, MO where she was from. The marriage certificate says he was of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This was 29 Mar, 1899. I do not know if it meant city or county.

At that time Samuel Caldwell ELDER is said to have been a railroad fireman. They had a daughter, Virginia Lorene ELDER that is said to have been born in Harrisburg, PA, 28 Mar, 1900. I'm not sure about the place--I did get it from SS forms. About three weeks later, Virginia A. ELDER nee Dixon died. I do not know where she is buried. 28 March 1904, Virginia Lorene ELDER went to live with an Aunt and Uncle Grimes in Colorado. I am told that Permanent Custody was awarded. Would this imply that Court Records might be found? Would there be directories from 1900? It seems that I have a large area to cover and I have to narrow it down. Does anyone familiar with this region have suggestions on where to look?

17 Jan 1901 Samuel Caldwell ELDER married Mary G. Bradley. They had several children--I'm still working on the years. Mary died and the children went to a Catholic orphanage.

It is said that Samuel Caldwell ELDER again was married and then divorced. I do not know the name of this wife.

I feel like I am grasping for straws, mostly because I am not familiar with Lancaster and Harrisburg. I had heard that record from some of these years were lost to fire.

Any pointers would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ginny in Virginia
