Leacock Presbyterian Church
Church History
The history of Leacock Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) begins with the early
settlers who left homes and families in Scotland and Ireland to escape the
persecution led by Charles II of England. They arrived in Lancaster County in
the early 1720's determined to worship God in the manner their convictions
dictated.
In 1740, a log church was built and given the name Leacock, since most
parishioners resided in Leacock Township. In 1754, skilled masons and stone cutters
were recruited from Ireland to build a more permanent structure that is now
known as "Old Leacock" Church. Located along PA Route 340 near Intercourse,
Pennsylvania, Old Leacock is still utilized for early morning services during July
and August as well as for special occasions such as Easter Sun Rise and
Thanksgiving and Christmas Eves.
Our present church, Leacock Presbyterian, was constructed in 1840, when the
population center shifted to Paradise. The original brick walls still frame the
side walls of the sanctuary. Extensive renovations in 1881, 1928, 1954, and
1993 have modified and enlarged the structure to accommodate the needs of the
membership.
