I'm happy to be helpful. Remember that spelling doesn't count. In fact,
the same soldier often has his name spelled 3 or 4 different ways on
documents within the same file. Most soldiers would speak their name and
someone else would write it down. "How do you spell that?" was not a
question that was generally asked, because it really didn't matter much at
that time.

Pension files, especially widows' pensions, are a wealth of information.
They are the original documents created by the ancestors themselves. In
order to be pensioned (in any war) widows had to prove their legal marriage
to the soldier, and prove the death or legal divorce of any previous spouses
of either of them. Widows also had to prove that they remained widows and
had not remarried. You can get a lot of b/m/d dates from pension files, as
well as affidavits from friends and other relatives testifying to the
widow's marital status and living conditions. Widows' pension files often
name the children and give birth dates. Affidavits often give other names
and relationships.

As far as the LDS site is concerned, it has some great resources, and they
do a lot of good work. But be careful about the online pedigrees. Many are
contributed by folks who are proud to contribute something but have no clue
how to legitimately research anything. Don't assume that the LDS
genealogists have checked that stuff for accuracy. None of it has been
checked by any "official genealogist" before it is uploaded to the site. I
could make a pedigree saying I am related to Santa Claus and upload it, and
folks would see it at the LDS site and copy it as truth and pass it on as
truth. Also, once something is proven wrong, there is no way to get rid of
it once it's there. That has mushroomed into a huge problem. If the name
of the submitter is not give given on the pedigree, it is very suspect.
Legitimate work will cite the source documents that were used.

Thank you so much for the 1812 War path. I will try and check it out.
Looking
at the LDS information, I found a Johannes Schreader-- coincidentally the
same spelling as the second John below.

1. John Shrader 2nd Regiment Light Infantry (Bache's), PA Militia
2. John Shreader 1st Regiment Riflemen (Irwin's) PA Militia

Johannes Shrader was supposedly born in Germany, Winterban Germany. I don't
have any experience in researching Germany, but it should be interesting.

Thanks again. Candee
