Volant College Founded in 1889

(continued)
After having had a conversation with Mr. Grim, and having found out
just where Volant was located, I took the train at New Castle and
started up the Neshannock. It seemed to me at that time that I was
going into a new and unknown country. Every bend of the river seemed to
be of interest to me. On arriving at Volant, I was met by Mr. G.B.
Carr, who was then employed by Mrs. J. Wilkins and Co. in the
manufacture of butter. I was entertained at the home of Mrs. James
Watkins and then had the opportunity of meeting with those interested in
the establishment of the academy. The building of the academy was then
under way but was only partly completed.
On my first trip to Volant, I met Dr. A.A. Cunningham, V.O. Wilkins,
Wm. Graham, J.J. Collins, Mrs. J. Wilkins, W.C. McConnell, I.D. Kirk,
Charles Broadbent, Thomas Clinefelter and many otheres interested in the
establishment of the institution. Arrangements were made for me to go
to Volant and take charge of the academy just as soon as my term of
school should close in Hillsville, Pa. I was to be given complete
charge of the school and receive as my compensation whatever tuition
might be paid by those who should attend the school.
