Hi Chris,
There's no such thing as free on the net. Anything that you find on the
net should be backed up by a real document. This is a place to start only.
The other big place to start only is the LDS.
I don't want to discourage you. If anything, I want to encourage you. I
built myself a very thick document file on many people in many of lines
by simply thinking things all of the way through.
In short, I have what I have by the simple equation of careful budgeting
and deciding what is the most important thing and going after that first.
And I did it for under $5,000 scattered over 20 years.
The census is the backbone of genealogy. If you can back your family into
the 1920 census, you are halfway there. A couple of census returns will
give you the framework. The 1890 census was burned in a warehouse fire
in 1923 and that has caused a lot of problems. Still, they can be gotten
around.
Let's start by seeing if you are part of my family. Who is your earliest
Steinmetz, where and when did they live.
Respectfully,
Jef
