I suggest that a name search for John Holder be ordered through the Pa.
State Archives in Harrisburg. For $5, they could find all the warrants,
surveys, and patents that are attributed to the name of John Holder. From
that search, they could order copies of these warrants, surveys (maps), and
patents. If the land was patented by someone else, it will show up in the
search. It will also name the township the land was located in at the time
of patenting, as well as the township name at the time of surveying. A
search like this will also turn up land that John Holder patented even if he
wasn't the warrantee.

The patent will indicate the trail of ownership if the warrant was sold (by
deed) and patented by someone else--it will indicate the dates of the
deed(s). If they are lucky, and if the land was patented many years later,
the name of the township will be that much closer to the current name. To
find the current-day location, they should seek out the deeds of the patent
holder conveying the land because at some point, the land was sold or
inherited. By pursuing subsequent deeds, a more current township name will
be found.

I think the Holder information they found in the book named below is
excellent information (I'd love to see this book!), but I think they need to
find the official information from the Archives in addition to what's in the
book.

Marie.
