If I remember what I read in a thread long ago, if we are answering a
question of general interest....for example, where we can find a record or
was a particular mine operating at a particular time...we should "reply all".
If, on the other hand, we've got information of interest to a particular
person... e.g., "your aunt was married to so-and-so and I know because she's
my great-grandmother"... that should be "reply". I think the idea was to not
have a lot of personal stuff of interest only to one person posted to
everyone. I think, too, that there was a long discussion a year or two ago
about making it easier on members to decide what might not need reading by
making sure the subject was specific as to what we were writing about.
Something like "Info on XYZ Mine" or "St. John's Records-Pittston" or
something like that. I must admit I'm not perfect at this, but it does help
me when others remember. I think that because list members come and go, it's
often difficult to make sure everybody knows the same stuff at the same time
about how the list works. Still, Luzerne is a very helpful and informational
list, with lots of folks who are very generous with time, information and
support.
