Helen,
I don't know if you've had any responses to your query about the silk mill
on Memorial Avenue, but I can hazard a possibililty....maybe someone else
on the list can confirm or correct???
There is an old, brick factory-type building on Memorial Ave -- it may be in
the 1600 block -- which in the 60's and 70's and maybe in the 50's? was owned
by a company called Brodart, which sells books and library supplies.
My father told me that building used to be a tannery, he worked there briefly
as a young man....I'm guessing the time period for that would have been
somewhere between 1935 and 1940. I do recall him mentioning a silk mill and I
think he was talking about the same building. Perhaps it was a silk mill before it
was a tannery.
The Lycoming Co. Historical society (858 West Fourth St, Williamsport PA
17701, phone 570-326-3326) may be able to give you a definite answer on this.
Regards,
Luann ()
