Greetings.
The Oswayo Valley Historical Society & Museum, located in the old schoolhouse at Millport (south of Shinglehouse) will, beginning in October, be offering its members a quarterly newsletter. Included in the newsletter will be upcoming events, area history, area genealogies, etc. Membership is currently a bargain at $5 annually, and will remain so even with the addition of the newsletter.
For those of you unsure if you had ancestors in the Oswayo Valley, here's a description of where it's located:
The Oswayo Valley is located in the extreme northwest section of Potter County, Pennsylvania, although the communities of Myrtle and Ceres, in McKean County, Pennsylvania, are also located in the valley. The Oswayo Valley stretches approximately 24 - 25 miles from Ceres in the northwest to Andrews Settlement in the southeast. Andrews Settlement, Oswayo, Eleven Mile, Ceres, Chrystal, Honeoye, Coneville, Myrtle, Wildcat, Sharon Center, Clara, Shinglehouse and Whitney Creek are located in the Oswayo Valley, and the Oswayo Creek flows through the townships of Sharon, Clara, Oswayo, Genesee, Hebron and Allegheny, in Potter County, and Ceres Township in McKean County.
Anybody interested in becoming a member of the Oswayo Valley Historical Society may do so by remitting the $5 annual fee (year runs from May 1st through April 30th) to: P.O. Box 699, Shinglehouse, PA 16748.
Meetings are held quarterly and the public is encouraged and invited to attend. Meetings feature guest speakers, with the last meeting focusing on the early years of the Temperance movement in the valley.
