Subject: [PAMONTGO-L] "in" attached to woman's surname
Date: Sun, 21 Feb 1999 10:43:42 -0600

Hi All!

This is part of a message I received from another list in response to the many
variations of the name FEGLEY. Several of us had questions about the "in" added
to the surnames of women.

Pat mailto:

>Also, Voegeli is NOT a variation of Voegelin. It's the other way around -
>Voegelin is a variation of Voegeli. The "in" at the end of a German surname was
>used to indicate a single woman. For example, my 5th great-grandfather Joseph
>Boger had a daughter who was shown as Regina Bogerin in the records.
>I don't believe you will ever see a wife with the "in" added; you will only see
it in the >marriage record when she is a bride before she takes her husband's
surname.
