History of Berks County (Biographical)
Kunkel
The Kunkel were among the pioneer families in Albany township, Berks
county. The family was founded there be I. George Kunkel (also spelled
Kunckell and Kungle) a native of Germany, who located there sometime
around in 1754, and it appears that he reared a large family.
II. George Kunkel, son of George, had children; George, Michael, John,
Adam, born May 8, 1792, died April 11, 1860, married Magdalena, born
April 17, 1792, died May 19, 1844, Andreas, Jacob, and Sally, who
married John Wagman.
II. George Kunkel, born Aug 4, 1789, he married Regina Krohm
II. Peter Kunkel, son of George the pioneer, was born Dec. 20, 1774 in
Albany township, died Oct 28, 1830 in Lynn township, Lehigh county. He
married Maria Magdalena Rausch.
III. Daniel Kunkel, son of Peter, was born in Albany township, Berks
county, March 2, 1798 and died Oct 26, 1863, he married in 1821 to Maria
Zimmerman, born Feb, 27, 1797, died July 14, 1859 and they are buried at
Frienden's cemetery. They had a large family (13 childre) among them
were, a daughter who marrid Daniel Brobst, Catharine, married Reuben A.
Dietrich, Mary who married ______Derr, Benjamin, John, who died at
McKeansburg, Jacob born in 1841, died in 1900 and Sarah, who married
Henry Bauscher.
IV. Benjamin, was born in Albany township, July 27, 1831, died May 24,
1904. He married Sarah Hartman, born in 1834 and came from Lehigh
county, and died Dec 20, 1904. They are buried at the New Mount Bethel
Church.
I. John AdamDietrich, born in the German Palatinate, in the Rhine Vally,
Oct 28, 1740, in 1751 his elder brother, Johannes Dietrich emigrated to
America and settled in Greenwich township, Berks county. He was followed
to this country by Adam, and brother Caspeer in 1767. The two brothers
crossed the Atlantic in the good ship "Britannia". Casper settled in
Northampton county, where he lived until about 1790, when he settled in
VA, from which State, his son Casper Jr., served as a soldier in the War
of 1812.
Adam married before his emigration to America, and two of his children,
Johann Adam and Johannn George, were born in the Fatherland. He married
Maria Barbara Steinbruch, d/o Jacob. She was bon March 13, 1741. Their
3rd child, Maria Barbara, born 1769, married Johannes Zimmerman, of
Albany township. Other children; 1. Johann Adam, 1765, 2. Johann George,
1767, 3. Maria Barbara (above), 4/ Maria Catharine, 1777, married Rev.
Johann Michael Schmidt, 5. Johann Jacob, 1773, 6. Johann Michael, born
1775, 7. Johann Heinrich, born 1777, 9. Maria Elizabeth, 10. Johann
Christian, born 1783, 11. Maria Magdalena born 1785, known as Polly, she
married ___Becker, 12 Anna Margaret, known as Beckie, married Jacob
Heffner.
II. Johann Adam, oldest son of Adam, the emigrant was born Dec 11 1765
in Germany, he married in 1788 Catharine Christ, born in 1767 and died
in Greenwich in 1837.
III. Johannes (1795-1872) married in 1823 to Catharine Kunkel, born in
Albany township June 8, 1800, died Sept 22, 1880.
IV. Daniel, son of Johannes was born in Albany (Stony Run). His wife,
Catharine Dietrich, d/o Michal, died Oct 10, 1895. They had 7 children,
one of whom, Mary, married Nathan Zimmerman.
