Subject: [PAMONTGO-L] I need help getting started with Montgomery County

My mother's side of the family is from Butler County and I have been using the resources there in my research. I need to know a bit more about what is available for Montgomery County. My grandfather, Thomas A. Anderson, was raised on his father's (Thomas P. Anderson) farm near Prospectville. I have learned what I know about them by ordering death certificates and checking the censuses. Thomas P. Anderson (born 1857) shows up in the 1880 census and subsequent censuses until his death in 1853. He was born in Pennsylvania to Robert Anderson (born in Pennsylvania) and his wife Mary Crawford (birth place unknown). (The birthplaces for Robert and Mary were supplied by Thomas' daughter on the death cert.) The censuses report at various dates that Thomas' parents were either both born in Pennsylvania or both born in Ireland.
If Robert was a young father in 1857, might he not have served in the Civil War? If so, does anyone have experience with researching Civil War vets from Pennsylvania?
Thomas P. Anderson was married to Emily, the daughter of Franklin and Susan Taylor. Emily's younger sister, Anna, had always lived on the same farm with Thomas and Emily. When Emily died at approximate age 55, Thomas married Anna. Aside from Thomas A. Anderson, Thomas P. and Emily had an older son Frank and a younger daughter, Maude.
I am trying to learn more about the Taylors of Horsham township and Robert Anderson and Mary Crawford, parents of Thomas P. Anderson. I would appreciate any suggestions from list members.
