Subject: [PAMONVAL] E. Furlong in Dr.'s Ledger
Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2000 14:06:22 EST
Hi All.
I have some information that leads me to believe that the "E. Furlong" that
appears in Dr. Henry Sweitzer Chalfant's ledger would be Ethel Furlong. In
searching for records of my Furlong family in the area, I have a few things
that appear to be from another Furlong family, or at least I have not been
able to make the connection at this point.
>From a biography of Cary Piper that appears in "Commemorative Biographical
Record of Washington County, Pennsylvania": E. C. Furlong (Edward C.) was
born February 27, 1823 in Maryland, and moved with his family to Allen
Township, Washington County, PA. In 1850, he married Amy Ann Stockdale.
Their children were Josephine (wife of Frank Hernett of Pasadena, Cal.),
William Allen (proprietor of a drug store at Laceyville, Penna. (should
probably be Lucyville now Roscoe), John F. (residing at Pittsburgh), Sarah,
Alice F. (wife of C. Piper), Letitia and Otho (living in Charleroi, Penn.
The William Allen Furlong listed above, married Ethel (I don't know maiden
name).
William and Ethel Furlong are listed in the 1920 census of Roscoe. William's
occupation is given as Postmaster and Ethel's is given as "Sales Lady
Drugstore". William's age is given as 68. I don't have Ethel's.
The Furlong's listed above are connected (it's very confusing) to Cary Piper
and his brother A.C. Piper. In the biography it also says that Cary Piper
opened a grocery business, in connection with his brother A.C., in Coal
Centre in 1873, which they exchanged for a drug store in 1874. They have
been very successful in the latter business (the drug store) which is
conducted under the firm name of Piper Bros., and they own some of the best
property in Coal Centre. This Cary Piper married Alice Furlong. So I
suppose other Furlongs, even Alice's father, Edward C. Furlong could have
been employed at the drugstore.
There is much more to the biography of Cary Piper and these Furlongs. If
anyone thinks they are connected to them, I will transcribe all when I have
time. Please let me know.
