I am researching the WEST, WHITAKER, MCCOMAS, LOWERY and HAYS families who settled in western Pennsylvania before 1800.
The following is a summary of information that I know:

Mary LOWERY, b. May 21, 1761, dau. of, Col. Alexander LOWERY and Mary WATERS, married 1st John (or Matthew) HAY(S) and moved to western PA after the Rev war, they had two sons; Lowery and John. The sons later moved to Shawneetown, IL. John HAY(S) died about 1789 leaving Mary a widow.

My GGG/GFather Joseph WEST, Sr., b. 1757, d. Mar. 19, 1841, in Allegheny Co., PA, he married 1st the widow Mary (Lowery) HAY(S) about 1789, they had four sons; Alexander, Edward, Joseph b. 1795 and Matthew b. 1799. Mary died between 1799 and 1812. Joseph Sr. married 2nd my GGG/GMother C(K)atherine WHITAKER, b. abt 1788, dau. of Aaron WHITAKER and Martha Ann ROUSH. Joseph and Catherine's 1st son, Aaron Whitaker WEST, b. 1813, is my GG/GdFather.

In 1796 Col. LOWERY sold his 300 acre Rev War land patent, named Leydon, located on the Monongahela River about 9 miles up river from Pittsburgh, to Joseph WEST and his daughter Mary (Lowery)(Hays) WEST. In 1871 the WEST heirs would sell the farm and it would become Homestead, PA.

I have located information in regard to the ancestors of Joseph WEST Sr. in several biographical history books about western PA; I have no proof to backup the bios.

The bios list Joseph's parents as Edward WEST and Elizabeth MCCOMAS who settled in Washington, Co., PA on a warrant named "Election Ground".

I have a DAR application that lists Edward WEST b. June 16, 1729 in Loudoun Co., VA, d. Jun. 14, 1812, in Washington, Co., PA. He married Elizabeth MCCOMAS 1769. She was b. Jan. 2, 1731, d. May 26, 1813. They are buried in "Old West" cemetery, in Washington Co., PA.

There is no Joseph WEST listed as a son of Edward on the DAR application. Elizabeth may be Edwards second wife since they married (1769) after Joseph was born (1757).

Thank You

Ralph West
