Thanks to Marie for her informative answer to the question about early PA
newspapers.
She also said "There might be a book translating Sauer's newspaper - I'm
not sure, but I've seen excerpts. "
There may be more than one book, but one that I've used is:
"Genealogical Data Relating to the German Settlers of Pennsylvania and
Adjacent Territory From Advertisements in German Newspapers Published in
Philadelphia and Germantown, 1734-1800," by Edward W. Hocker, (1980)
This does not have obituaries (I don't know that pre-1800 papers did much
with obituaries) but the compiler extracts names and places from these
early papers and many of the names relate to Northampton County surnames.
I found an absolutely crucial piece of my puzzle in this book.
Regarding another of my ancestors - one who died in Lehigh Co. in 1841 -
there is a note that an obituary appeared in a German-language newspaper.
Don't have the name of the paper. You'd probably have to hire a
professional searcher who can read old German and is familiar with the
holdings of the Lehigh County Historical Society where these old papers
probably exist.
