Looking for the parents of Jacob Kester, b. 22 May 1784 in Northampton
County, d. 30 Mar 1873 in Sullivan County, Pa. Jacob m. Katherine
Knubaharin. They had one son Joseph, b. 1809, before their 1813 migration to
Sullivan Co. via the first Susquehanna and Tioga Turnpike from Berwick
(Columbia Co.). There are numerous Kesters (formerly Kster?) in Northampton
Co., the problem is discerning which one is Jacobs father.
Normally the spouses surname would provide a clue, however in this case the
name Knubaharin isnt even considered a legitimate German name and I have
not found it elsewhere among Pennsylvania German immigrants. To my knowledge
it hasnt been documented anywhere other than George Strebys History of
Cherry Township (Sullivan Co.), 1903/05. German speaking peoples often put
the suffix in after a name to denote a female and the name might
originally have been Neuber, a very common name in Germany and also in many
Pennsylvania areas. Katherine Neuber + in could conceivably been
transmogrified into K. Neuberin, K. Neubarin, Knubarin and ultimately
Knubaharin, but that remains to be discovered and proven.
