Fries Rebellion
John Fries was born in Hatfield township, Montgomery county about 1750,
married Mary Brunner of White Marsh, at the age of 20 and 5 years later
removed to Milford, Bucks Co., where he built a house on the land of
Joseph Galloway at Boggy Creek. At the time of the outbreak he lived in
a log house on a lot the belonged to William Edwards on the Sumneytown
road. He had served in the Rev.. "He was a man of good mind", says Gen.
W. H.H. Davis in his "History of Bucks County", but he had received only
the rudiments of an education. He talked well, and possesed a rude
eloquence that alway swayed the multitude. His character was good, and
he stood well among his neighbors. He learned a cooper's trade, but
followed the occupation of a vendue crier. He died about 1820.
