Polk township
William Kresge, settled in Polk township about 1765 on the farm now
owned by his great-grandson, "Rogers " Kresge. He had 8 children viz.
Jacob, William, George, Joseph, Sallie, married John Sefass, Susan,
married Peter Kunkel, Hannah married Reuben Gregory, Jacob, married
Sallie Gregory and had 5 children viz; Nathan, Reuben, Katie, Hannah
married Charles Shafer, and Mary who died young. He was the oldest man,
now living in the township (1886) being born in 1804 His parents both
lived to be 88 years. William married Sallie Storm, and was the father
of 9 children, viz/ Andrew, Berlin, Hannah, married Charles Serfass,
Elizabeth to Joseph Frantz, Caroline to Peter Frantz, Katie to
Cornelius Smith, arah to Cornelius Seigenfus, Susan to Aaron "Sult", and
Mary who married Reuben Berger. George took as his wife Sallie Kunkle,
and they had 7 children,viz; Paul, Freeman, Monroe, Mahlon, Katie
married George Anglemoyer, Christanna married Reuben Frable and Sallie
married Nathan Hawk. Joseph was the husband of Lucinda Andrew, by who he
had 10 children, viz; William of Brodheadsville, Nathan, Franklin,
Charles, married William Serfass, Hannah, married John Nisson, Elizabeth
married Joseph Shmale, Amanda married Charles Serfass, Catharine and

Schmale, Joseph D. The paternal grandfather of Joseph D. was Joseph
Schmale, who when a young man left Germany and came to America with his
two brothers. Joseph settled in Eldred township. Here William Schmale
was born, the grandfather of Joseph D., who married Barbara
"Seilfece"His son, David, father of Joseph D., was born 1818 he married
Barbara Serfass, of Polk township. David Schmale died March 16, 1866
aged 47. His wife died in 1892. Both are buried at the Kunkeltown church
cemetery. Children; David , Joseph D., Charles, Elizabeth, wife of Peter
"Trable", Paul of Eldred, Reuben of Northampton Co., Adam of Luzerne
Co,Henry, Nathan, Thomas of Clearfield Co.
Joseph D., was born Nov 11, 1844. On March 26, 1866 he married Elizabeth
Serfass, who was born Jan 22, 1841, d/o Aaron and Elizabeth (Hawk)
Serfass. Children; Ella, two infants died, Adam married Frances D. Hawk,
and Eva wife of Allen P. Schafer, of Eldred.
