Roth Family
This family, one of the first to settle in Whitehall, is of Swiss
origin. The family resided for hundres of years in the city of Basel,
where in 1372 Hartman Roth was Burgomeister and in 1444, Johannes Roth,
also Burgomeister, both Knights, rescued the citizens of Basel from a
dangerous position in battle of St. Jacob, and in 1446 was the envoy of
Count Ludwig of the Palatinate to the city of Constance Peter Roth,
Burgomeister of Basel in 1456 was a knight of Jerusalem and was captain
in command of 800 citizens of Basel in the battle of Grandson and over
2,000 foot soldier and 100 horesmen at the battle of Murten in 1746. In
the same year he was envoy to the meeting between the Count of Savoy and
the citzens of Genff. Jacob Roth, born in 1638 and died 1703, was a
famous physician and author of Basel and was rector of the high school
in 1691.

Daniel Roth, of this family was born in 1703, came to this country in
the ship "Hope", with his wife and 2 children and his sister Anna
Magdalene and her husband John Jacob Schreiber, having left Niederbronn
on May 4, "1773", where his sister and been married April 288.

The Roth and Schreiber families lived from some time in Skippack
township, Montgomery County,but in "1737" moved to Whitehall township,
where Daniel Roth applied for a warrants for a tract of 150 acres of
land, on which he had located, situated on the Jordan creek, where the
village of Sherersville is now located. Before the warrant was granted
to him he was taken sick and died in April 1737, in the same hour he
son, Peter was born. The warrant date May 25, 1737, was then granted to
his widow, who did remain long upon the land, but with her youngest son
removed futher south and resided among the Quakers. She died Feb 25,
1757, aged about 53. The land warranted to Daniel Roth was subsequently
granted to John Reinhard Benny, on Aug 10, 1748. His widow, Regina
Louisa Benny married Gottfried Knauss, who received the land on June 25,
1761. Daniel Roth and Peter Rhoads, only surviving issue of Daniel Roth,
released to Gottried Knauss, all right, tittle and interest in the above
tract of land.

Daniel Roth and his wife, Anna Margaret, had 3 children, Daniel, Jacob,
confirmed at Egypt 1753, died prior to 1761, and Peter, who having been
educated among the Quakers, spelled his name at Rhoad, became a
prominent Rev. patriot and and judge and died at Allentown in 1814.


Daniel Roth, eldest son of Daniel, was born in Switzerland in 1724.
After the death of his fathers he resided with Peter Troxell and
subsequently secured by warrants of June 12, 1750 and Aug 5, 1757, 237
acres of land adjoining his father's former tract on the west.
He married Cathrine Margaret Miller, who was born in 1739, and died Aug.
1813 Daniel Roth died Feb 22, 1817. Members of the Zion Reformed Church
and was buried in Allentown. They had 11 children. Their son Daniel
became as soldier in the Rev. and was killed in the battle of
Germantown.

Roth, John Philip, came to America on the ship "Phoenix" and arrived in
Phila on Oct 20, 1744. He settled in Lower Saucon township near
Hellertown and married a Miss Lerch. His son John Philip Roth had
children, John, Philip, William, Maria w/o John Reinhard, Mrs. Margaret
Biery and Susanna, wf of Joseph Koch. Joseph Koch and Susanna had
children, Caroline married William Werner, Matlda married Prof. J.O.
Knauss. Catharine married Michael Hauser, Charles married Amanda Gaumer
and John married Maria Slough.
