All:

my thoughts on "Mahantongo"-

I'd noticed references to Mahantongo also and had wondered where this was
(in Northumberland Co). As was mentioned, there was a Mahantongo Twp that
was once part of Berks Co and later became the township of that name when
Schuylkill Co was laid out. But what did it refer to in Northumberland Co
and on which side of the river(s) (as Northumberland was very large then).

For example, I've seen it as the location in Fisher's Wills and Admin.
abstracts of Northumberland Co. John Shirk in 1794 ...etc... John Steffen 1810/2
... I had never tracked these people down in tax lists to see where they *later*
lived. That might help. But by 1810, Mahantongo Twp would have definitely
been known to be in Berks/Schuylkill Co and the frequency of wills filed
in Northumberland Co to have them really be Berks residents seems odd to me
(I have seen wills filed in neighboring counties). Also, I don't recognize
the names of these folks as being in the later "Mahantongo Valley" encompassing
the area that goes from Mahantongo Twps into Northumberland County's
Mahanoy Twps.

So I dont' have the answer, just more questions for the astute student of
history...

Tim
