Hello Listers,
Some days ago I subscribed to this list not being sure it was the
correct one for Centralia, PA. I received several e-mails telling me
that Centralia was in fact in Columbia County, not Northumberland
County. Even some wonderful people offered me help by searching
records they had from other counties, e.g. Columbia and Schuylkill.
But having no family connections, or so I thought, in Northumberland
County, I signed off the list.
Then, during the weekend I was going through index cards for 1897-1902
passenger lists (NYC arrivals)
and found my grandfather's immigration card the second time he came to
the States. This was in January 1899. On it he says that he'd been in
the USA in 1891-1895 and resided in Shamokin. On this second arrival
to the States he said he was going to join relatives in Shamokin. So
now I'm back on the list.
My grandfather, John GOGOTZ (on the immigration card he spells it Jan
GOGOC), married the oldest of the YADLOWSKY daughters, Anna, in 1904.
I'd been told he'd gone back to the "old country" and then returned.
I'm not sure who is relatives were in Shamokin, but believe they were
his mother's nephews whose surname was ZUK (also spelled ZHUK). My
uncle told me that he recalls going with his father to Shamokin / Mt.
Carmel, to visit ZUK relatives that had a brewery there. He recalls
riding on the horse-driven carts used to deliver kegs of beer. He told
me they later moved to New York.
Does anyone on this list have access to the 1900 census records for
Shamokin?
I'm also looking for any information on a Gabriel (aka Harry) GOGOTS
who lived in Mt. Carmel. I'm told he left Mt. Carmel rather abruptly
(why?) to NYC sometime around 1936. Have no other info.
Also researching: KELPACH / KLEPACH, POLIFKA, YADLOWSKY
Best regards,
Ragnar
