Hello Glenda,
Perhaps what you describe is a parochial custom. My genealogical
program, Brother's Keeper, which is available in a number of languages
and is appropriate all over the world, identifies the siblings of a
parent as "aunt" and "uncle"; siblings of a grandparent as "great-aunt"
and "great-uncle;" siblings of a great-grandparent as "great-great aunt"
and "great-great uncle"; siblings of a great-great grandparent as "3rd
great aunt" and "3rd great uncle"; etc., etc.
I believe if you look beyond your own local custom, you will find the
above to be commonly accepted useage. At least it would be wise for you
to consider these meanings FIRST if persons from outside your local
custom should employ these terms when writing to you about your
ancestral family.
Cordially,
Nelson R. Sulouff
