Tammy,
In the 18th-19th Centuries the settlers in this region of Pennsylvania
erected rather rude farmhouses with translucent materials such as vellum
(unsplit lambskin, kidskin, or calfskin) or heavy oiled paper covering
the windows. As the standard of living progressed, some second and third
generation farmers on a property would replace the earlier farmhouses
with larger farmhouses in which glass was used in the windows. Large
houses with glass windows were characteristically referred to as
"mansions," and the farms on which such homes were built came to be
called "mansion farms." Tax schedules normally differentiated between
"mansion" properties and the properties that did not have glass in the
windows.
You should be able to locate the farm you are looking for by searching
the tax records for the area surrounding the town of Herndon, which was
Jackson Township, Northumberland Co.
